Garmin Express 7.11.1.0 - Error installing the mapping update

Been trying to update my Nuvi 50LM maps for almost two months, but after an hour or so, I keep getting "There was an error installing the update".  Garmin Express did/does update to 7.11.1.0, but it gets to 88% of maps update & after about 15 minutes gives the error.  I've re-booted my Win 10 PC, removed & re-installed Garmin Express, and tried everything else I've read online regarding this issue.  Never had any issues with my Nuvi 50LM before 2022!  Seems like a waste to have Lifetime Mapping, and not be able to update.  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanx

  • Thanks for the reply.  I have tried the steps you suggested multiple times over the last couple of months…same results.  One thing I did notice this last time was that after copying files at 3.4 mbs / 6 minutes left when it gets to 88%, it drops the copy rate into the 120 kbs & the copy rate starts climbing, then after it gets back to 1.4 mbs (takes about 15 minutes, it still shows only 88%, and keeps re-starting the copy rate before it errors out.  I tried it again and this time when the copying rate dropped, I actually turned off my DSL box…but according to Garmin Express the file rate still kept increasing like it was still copying files.  Seems like Garmin Express once it got to 88%, it would go no further whether the Internet access was on or off.  I have never had any issues with my Internet connection in the past nor do I have any issues with other programs or devices.  It appears that there is currently no way for me to update my Nuvi50.  By the way, just checked and now my current device North America maps show a date of 2016.

  • The latter part of the process is Express, having downloaded the files to the PC, then compiling the map file and installing it to your device. So it sounds like the issue is that. How much free space do you have on your device?

  • SUSSAMB may be correct about a space issue.  In that regard you may want to check for the presence of past map updates which to a large degree are not necessary.  Garmin Express does a great job of updating, but doesn't do a good job of cleaning up after itself.

In the folder C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Mapare numerous folders named Map_Map.NA2021.20 or similar. Each folder is 6+ GB.  You can safely delete them but I keep only the last two.

In the folder C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Applicationthere are folders named Application_Application.express-windows 7.1.4.0 or something similar. Each of those folders are 112 MB and can be deleted.

In the folder C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Firmware there are folders named Firmware_Firmware.006-B19948.00.8.80 or something similar. Each of these folders is about 83 MB. I had 40 of these folders, for a total of 3.3 GB!

If you have trouble "seeing" any of these folders in Windows, make sure the setting for hidden files is set to allow hidden files to be seen.

Don't forget that after you do some manual cleanup to empty the recycle bin and then retest installing GE.  Without that key step you haven't really removed anything from your drive.

I discussed this on another site (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/50977) and some people reported freeing up 250 GB!
