Hours To Install Map Update

Hello

The last couple of times I attempted to do the City Navigator North America Map updates for my Garmin DriveSmart 61 on my desktop running Windows 10, the estimated download/install time showed that it could take anywhere from 8 to10 hours.

I've been using the same computer to do any updates for the DriveSmart 61 that I bought almost 3 years ago and never had any update issues until fairly recently.

Also use the same computer to do updates for my Garmin Dash Camera and eTrex 20 and don't have any update issues with those two devices.

The latest map update attempt was yesterday for map version 2023.10 which once again showed the update time to be between 8-10 hours.

Garmin Express shows the DriveSmart as being connected.

The download speed starts off really fast and then very quickly slows right down to almost nothing.

Using Ethernet cable connection for desktop.

I've done speed tests to check things out and they always show download speed times to be in the 900 MB/s range.

I have all kinds of space available on the DriveSmart. More than enough to handle the 7.89 GB map update.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Garmin Express a couple of times on the desktop and I'm pretty sure I have the most current version of it.

It got to the point where I installed Garmin Express on my Apple laptop and was able to do the 2023.10 map update in a little under 10 minutes using Wi-Fi.

Any thoughts as to why the updates aren't working properly using the desktop?

  • Clearly a problem with your desktop, but extremely difficult to diagnose via a forum. Best to call Product Support for detailed help.

You could try this FAQ first support.garmin.com/.../

  • Hello
What you say about it being a possible computer problem crossed my mind as well but, I would be surprised if that is the case.
I'm not having any issues with anything else desktop computer related that I'm aware of except for trying to do the Garmin map updates recently for the DriveSmart.

What I have noticed though when I go to reinstalled Garmin Express is, it shows the latest Garmin Express software version as being 7.11.1.0 but after the install process is completed successfully, it's showing version 6.30 as what was installed.
The same thing shows when I did the Garmin Express version update on my laptop before installing the latest map update a couple of days ago.

I'll call Product Support and see what they have to say.

    Thank you for your reply.

  • Correction on my part.

I think I was wrong regarding the software version things.
I thought version 6.30 was referring to the actual Garmin Express version but I realize now that 6.3 is referring to the map  software version.

Now, I'm also beginning to think the desktop isn't recognizing the DriveSmart when it's plugged into the USB port on the desktop even though Garmin Express shows it as being connected.
I say that because the DriveSmart isn't listed when I go to do the "Safely remove hardware and eject media" step.

Is that possible for Garmin Express to recognize the device but the desktop doesn't?.

The dash camera for example does show as being listed when I go to do the safely remove hardware step anytime I do an update for it.

  • It won't show under safely remove as by default, in common with all recent Garmin models, it works as a mtp device and not mass storage.
