iTunes library not found by Garmin Express

If I select "Manual" for managing my music in Express then it finds all my music files no problem. The problem with this of course is that I have to copy each track across manually and there is no support for playlists.

If I select "iTunes" for music management, Express finds nothing.

My iTunes media file is C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

I have allowed the sharing of .xml files from the iTunes preferences and my library files are located in the ..\iTunes folder (iTunes Library.iti and iTunes Music Library.xml).

All my music files are physically located in the ..\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music folder.

I use iTunes for music across all my devices so I was hoping to do the same for my Garmin Forerunner 245 Music as well but so far no luck.

Any good hints or tips appreciated!

  • Has this ever worked for you, or are you setting it up for the first time? If this was previously working, can you roughly pinpoint when it stopped?

I'm currently having the same problem. Garmin Express was working with my iTunes library for a couple of years, but now it doesn't. Late last year I went for a couple of months without adding any new audio content to my Garmin device. During that time, Garmin released a new version of Garmin Express, and Apple released a new version of iTunes. I'm wondering if one of those updates has caused this problem.

I have a 3-year-old copy of my iTunes Music Library.xml file. If I copy that to C:\users\username\Music\iTunes, Garmin Express can read my old music library as it existed at that time. However, when I put the newest copy of the XML file in the appropriate directory, Garmin Express cannot find any content in my music library.

Based on this, I wonder if Apple has changed the structure of the iTunes Music Library.xml file generated by the latest version of iTunes for Windows. If that file has changed somehow, perhaps Garmin Express can no longer read library information from it. So far this is just guesswork. I opened a ticket with Garmin on this issue one month ago, but so far the problem remains unresolved.

My iTunes Music Library.xml file needs to update regularly, because I mostly listen to podcasts on my Garmin device. I'd be interested in hearing from others who are using iTunes with Garmin Express. Is this still working for most people? Can Garmin Express still see your iTunes library?

If anyone is interested in generating a new iTunes Music Library.xml file to test, please back up your current file first - just in case. If something has changed with Apple's XML file that causes this problem, I wouldn't want people to lose access to their libraries just to test this.

  • I only just installed Garmin Express yesterday so this was the first time I tried it.

It would be useful if GE let us select which library file to use. As it is, I don't know if the problem is with my iTunes library file or if GE is looking in the wrong directory. The lack of feedback from the program makes it hard to troubleshoot anything.

  • Based on communication with Garmin about this issue a couple of years ago, Garmin Express is looking for

    iTunes Music Library.xml

    inside C:\users\username\Music\iTunes.

If that matches your setup, that should be what you need. My setup has an added complication, because I have iTunes installed on D:. For the past couple of years, I've been manually copying the XML file to the directory listed above, and that has been working all this time. Something has changed that caused this to stop working, and my hunch is that it's iTunes changing the format or structure of the XML file. Only a hunch though.

Hopefully I'll hear something soon from my open ticket.

  • Hello,
It was also not working for me since "long time" but now it is resolved with new Garmin Express version 7.12.0.0 Slight smile

So try to update your version and try again

    Best regards

  • Lo and behold! It lives!

Thanks for the heads up, 7.12.0.0 appears to have fixed everything.
