Fenix 6X Pro icon missing

After I have upgraded my E xpress to the latest version I cannot see the icon of 6X Pro.

Actually everything else is fine with the watch sync, just there is a very narrow part  of the icon, at the top, the other parts of it is missing.

Is it a general problem?

Or is it just something related to me is there a place where I can find the correct icon? I would like to avoid an unistall-reinstall cycle.

  • The icon is a PNG file located in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Devices\<device>.named device.png.

If the image below is the one you are looking for, the attached ZIP file contains the related device.png file.

     f6X-device.png.zip

As this file appears to have become corrupted, it may be worth checking the file system where Garmin Express is installed for errors as a precautionary measure.

  • Thanks.

I will check it, especially because I observed another strange thing.

I have an Edge 530, too, which is clear from the pic I attached. :-)

Its connection to my desktop (win 7 32 bit) was unstable so I decided to uninstall and reinstall the usb drivers. Fun fact, but it was not the driver, but the usb micro cable which caused the problem. :-)

So when I reinstalled Edge 530 as a new device it was properly shown in windows as a drive F: called “Edge 530”. But from the second plug-in of Edge until the very now it is simply called “removable disk”. And there is the default small grey icon (i guess it is a HD drive symbol) next to its name. It works properly as a USB mass storage, but it is strange, isnt it?

Surely I could rename it to “Edge 530” in Properties, but even in this case I would not get back the default state when there is a “microsize” blue icon left to the name of the driver as it is the case for Fenix 6X right now, and it was the case for Edge 530 earlier.

  • Maybe it should deserve a new thread in another forum, but I dont know where, because it may be more like a Windows question, than a Garmin sw one. But I guess there are smart people here who knows very well the difference between Edge 530 and Fenix 6X as a device from the aspect of Windows 7.

So after lots of attempts to install Edge 530, after I disabled and re-enabled auto device installation, etc., finally I got Edge 530 as a Portable device, so it seemed that it was handled exactly the same way as Fenix 6x Pro by Win 7. Here it is a screenshot:

So finally I was happy, because Edge 530 is shown with a blue triangle as a icon by Windows Explorer. But a new question arose for me, why F6x is not shown with the same way? It is the same question of icons? For some reasons installing Edge 530 retrieves the blue Garmin icon while installing F6X  does not. But why the heck?

    See what I mean here:

  • Just a new idea, is it related to the difference, that although both are portable devices for Win 7, Edge is also a usb mass storage, while F6x not, and it is why the former gets a drive letter F:?

  • Your idea is correct.

Garmin Edge devices (and some older watches) mount as USB Mass Storage devices and are therefore allocated a drive letter by Windows.

Newer Garmin watches mount as MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) devices which are not [and can not be]  allocated a drive letter by Windows.

For USB Mass Storage devices Windows finds the display name of the device and the location of  icon in a file called autorun.inf  in the root folder of the device. Sometimes Windows does not read [or ignores] this file and instead uses a generic display name and icon.

For MTP devoices the display name and icon are supplied to Windows by the MTP device during initial connection setup.

  • First of all thank you for the clarification.

For USB Mass Storage devices Windows finds the display name of the device and the location of  icon in a file called autorun.inf  in the root folder of the device. Sometimes Windows does not read [or ignores] this file and instead uses a generic display name and icon.

I see. So it must have been the reason why sometimes I got the proper name and icon, and why later I did not. Since the latest device installaltion it seems to be stable as regards proper mounting, but I became a bit sceptical as regards future mounts.

Newer Garmin watches mount as MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) devices which are not [and can not be]  allocated a drive letter by Windows.

I checked the menu items of my Fenix 6X, and found “USB mode”. There are two options, MTP and Garmin. Now MTP is chosen.

Due to the earlier painfulness I dont want to cause more problems to my desktop, I mean to confuse the device management part of Win 7, and therefore  instead of testing myself let me ask you what would happen if I switched it to Garmin? Even in this case would it mount as an MTP device?  Or would it mount as a Mass Storage device?

  • As long as your Edge 830 mounts, is allocated a drive letter, and you can access it, don't worry too much if a generic name and icon are used. (It's a Windows thing!)

If the 'USB Mode' is set to 'Garmin' the watch will display a screen asking if you want to 'Use MTP (media transfer)?' with options of 'Yes' or 'No' when you connect it to a PC.-

If you select 'Yes' the watch will mount and you can access files on the watch while it is charging the battery. If you want to manage the watch using Garmin Express you will need to select 'Yes'.

If you select 'No' the watch will remain in watch mode but the battery will charge. As far as the PC is concerned the watch does not exist. This option is useful if you want to charge the watch from a PC but don't want the PC to be able to access the watch.
