How to use an SD card

I have a Navigator V with about 7G of internal storage and about 200M available.  It tells me I need more memory and to get a card.  So I recently acquired a 16G SDCH card for it.  Express sees the card, Basecamp sees the card, Windows Explorer sees the card - and there is nothing on the card.  So the question is, do I need to put anything on the card?  Or will Express, Basecamp, or the Navigator itself simply use or overflow to the card if/when required?  Sorry if this is an elementary question, but I can't seem to find a direct answer to how I actually use the card.

    Express will use it if needed. If you want BaseCamp to use the card just select it instead of your device when sending data. Your device is unlikely to use the card as 200Mb is more than enough.

    OK, thanks.  I did install 9 routes on the card from Basecamp.  When I "Imported" them to the Navigator it took 2 hours to complete - vrs seconds when installed in the internal memory.  So that does not seem to be a useful use for the card.

    Guess I'll just ride on with my 200Mb available.

    I have a zumoXT and one handy thing I learned about the SD card is that you can store routes on it that you will want to re-ride so that they don't take up space on internal memory.  They remain on the SD card after being imported so, you can ride an imported route, delete it using the device which remove is from internal memory, and then import it again at some future time.  You will want to test and confirm that it works the same way on your Navigator V.

    It is interesting that you say.  It used to be that when I imported a route to my trip planner (from internal storage), and then deleted it from the trip planner, it was gone.  But now, when I import to trip planner and then delete it, it is still available to import again.  Apparently one of the software updates along the way.  I haven't found a way to delete a trip from the internal storage or the card except to delete the GPX folder which deletes all trips.  But thanks.

    I read here that I could delete a trip from the device via Basecamp, but I have not found that to be so.

    What I meant to say is when I import them to the Trip Planner.

    BaseCamp can only read from or write to your device, it cannot delete anything, that has to be done via the device or directly using Windows Explorer for some data.
