My Drive 50 won't connect to my PC

I am trying to update the maps on my Garmin Drive 50.  When I connect it to my PC, it appears as a (completely full, zero bytes available) drive in File Explorer, but Garmin Express can't find it.  I have tried with several different USB ports, both on powered hubs and on the PC itself.  I have also tried with several different USB cables.  Nothing has made any difference.

I found a video on Youtube that suggested I let the device battery charge fully, then try again.  It has been connected to my PC for several hours but still shows the "charging" icon.  Below that is the graphic of the device connected to a tower PC.  The icon is in yellow/orange, and Garmin Express still shows the device as "Not Connected."

What can I try next?

  • Power from a PC often isn't sufficient to charge a device, you'd be better off charging it in your car or using a wall charger.

However I'm surprised your device is showing as completely full, if so even if Express were to see it updating it would be problematical. Note too the latest version of Express, 7.7.0.0, seems to have issues seeing some devices, see other threads here.

First can you check your 50 really is full, if so what have you added to it as a normal 50 should have ample space available.

  • As far as I can recall, I haven't added anything to it.  In File Explorer it shows as having a few KB free out of a 3.38GB capacity.  I am using Garmin Express v7.5.0.0, running on Windows 7.

I tried plugging into a wall charger and it behaved as if I had connected to the car charger: ready to navigate, etc.  Also, the battery icon at top right was different.  I don't understand why it needed to charge at all; it is always in my car and plugged in, so it's charging whenever the accessory outlet is on.  But that's a different question.  Right now I just want to do a map update.

  • Well first I'd try freeing up some space, as why yours is so full I have no idea. You could do this by deleting unnecessary text, vehicle, voice, help, keyboard and EULA files. If Express still fails to recognise your 50 try switching it to mass storage mode from mtp mode.

  • OK, I've tried deleting unnecessary files.  I got 200MB free.  My computer recognizes the Drive 50 now-- I guess it was the low free space causing the problem.  I guess I'll have to get a microSD card for it.
