Map update to SD Card

Hello Folks,

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on how to update my nüvi 255W to a SD card? It has Lifetime updates when I bought it for Full Coverage of Europe. Many thanks in advance!!

Further info . . .

Using Garmin Express, I get to the point where it says the map update is too large so select a partial update from the selection given.

Express does NOT recognise or ask me to insert a SD card in order that I get the full update, which is really annoying

I also have a nüvi 2445, which I recently updated, and when it came to the same place in the update process it recognised the SD card and put the update there, no problem.

Both SD cards I bought were brand new and formatted to FAT32 so don't believe it's a problem with those.

I have also 'chatted' with a useless product support advisor about how to get the update to the SD card only to be told to 'upgrade' the device. As the device is perfectly functional plus if I wanted to buy a map, I have the option to download or have it sent on a SD card, which tells me that you can have a Full Coverage map on the SD card, his 'advice' was simply no advice.

I'm aggrieved that Garmin Support has not offered either a way to update the map to the SD card or offered me a direct download as I have Lifetime Map Updates on my device. It seems that they are not fulfilling their guarantee or obligation in this regard.

Ideas??? Advice??

Cheers

  • Does your PC recognise this SD card as a separate device / disk drive when this card is in device's SD card slot and nuvi 255 connected to PC?

  • Hi Krzemien,

Yes, it does.  See screen shot from Garmin Express.

    .

  • Uh, I then run out of the ideas.

Perhaps check this FAQ as I can see this device is really dated?

  • Hi again,

I've already been there and spoken to 'advisors' and am still waiting for a proper answer. I know the device can read open source maps from the SD card as I've already tried and it works but I want the official Garmin maps. Yes, the unit is old but it still works and does the job so why change it??

If I bought an update they (Garmin) would send it on a SD card so I don't understand why they can't send me an update to put on the SD card if Garmin Express won't let me do it.  The unit had Full Europe Coverage with lifetime updates so only asking that they honour their committent and promise.

    Thanks for responding, anyway.

    cheers

    Ciro

  • Not sure but its possible the 255 doesn't allow this. The answer is to install the map to your PC and then use BaseCamp or MapInstall to send the map to the card.

As for not honouring the lifetime maps guarantee, see the caveats here which might apply to a 255

  • Without dissecting this situation any further I fear you might eventually find that Garmin's position is quite clear when it comes to handling this situation:

  • Hi Sussamb and Krzemien,

The fact is, that Garmin's position is NOT clear and they have NOT offered a cogent explanation of WHY I can't put the update to the SD card. IF they had said that my 255 didn't have either the required Firmware or Hardware and had offered a work around, then fine, I can accept and understand that but they have offered NO solution, NO apology, NO work around on an item that claims to have 'Lifetime updates', which is what I purchased, regardless of how old the device is.  It has a SD slot so it must be able to be utilised!!??

If Garmin had been magnanimous enough to offer . . . something . . . by way of compensation or a way of answering this problem I wouldn't be going round the houses asking and bothering people as to how to sort this problem out and would then accept the outcome.  Until then, I will still be seeking a solution.

You say that I can download the map to Basecamp?  Thing is, I'm not being offered the Full Map Coverage to download, I can only select partial countries or are you saying I can download the Full Map coverage despite what I'm being told/shown via Garmin Express?

    kind regards

    Ciro

  • Well see the link posted, you're lucky that there is even a way to do what you want as the Garmin disclaimer is clear. Why you feel you should be compensated in some way is beyond me.

Turning to your issue, there should be an option under map options to install the map to your PC, this will be the full map. If that option isn't there first install the partial updated map to your device after which the option to install the map to your PC should be there. See this FAQ support.garmin.com/.../

If that doesn't work try this www.poi-factory.com/.../39231

  • Hi Sussamb,

Firstly, with regard to you thinking that why I should be compensated in some way is beyond you . . . I was not looking for money or a new device (as I also have a newer nüvi 2445) by way of compensation but perhaps a map update via a SD card failing any other way of getting the update. I don’t want any more or less than what I’m entitled to.

As for the disclaimer (below) . . . I have not transferred this map update to either another person or device.

As it says, thelifetime maps entitles me to receive map updates during the useful life of my Garmin product or as long as Garmin receives map data from its current third party supplier, whichever is shorter.

As my 255 is still working fine then I think this applies, don’t you??

    Lifetime Maps²

nüMaps Lifetime is a 1-time purchase that lets you download the most up-to-date map information on streets, highways and points of interest as soon as new content is available — for the lifetime of your Garmin device. Lifetime maps entitles you to receive map updates during the useful life of your Garmin product or as long as Garmin receives map data from its current third party supplier, whichever is shorter. “Not transferable to another person or Garmin product”.

We continually increase our map coverage and map features; although we allow for map growth, additional memory (SDTm card, purchase required) may be necessary in the future.

Secondly, if you don’t work for Garmin, then you should be!!  Your link to a cogent workaround to the problem I’ve had, worked, perfectly, so a  massive  thank you!!  I’m very happy that I’ve been able to update  my original Full Coverage maps to the newer Full Coverage ones and copy them to the SD card and also that I persevered with trying to find a way to do it.  I truly believed there had to be a way and so it has proved. What I’m disappointed and sad at is the fact that Garmin didn’t offer me this solution or anything else to get me updated.

Yes, it's an old model but I love it and is faster and easier to use than my 2445. I use both as back up and in case one goes pear shaped.  Good to have a spare.   I couldn't live without a Satnav and think they're one of the best tools to have been invented.

    Anyway, that’s it!!  Done!!  Sorted!!

Once again, a huge thank to you.

    Kind regards
