Garmin Express v7.4.2.0 does not work on Windows Virtual Box

I am trying to run Garmin Express v7.4.2.0 on a virtual Windows 10 and the program does not start. I just click on the Garmin Express icon and nothing happens. I had the same issue with some other versions but all I had to do is install an older version and everything was fine. The problem is that now I am forced by Garmin Express to update to the newest version so the trick does not work anymore. The new version claims to install critical updates, but for me it just makes Garmin Express crash.

I am a Linux user and as Garmin does not offer support for Linux (hem!) I installed that virtual machine just to get access to Garmin Express. I have Windows 10 Pro (10.0.19042 Build 19042) installed and I tried to run Garmin Express as administrator but it did not help. What could I try now?

Honestly I don't understand why the newer versions do not work, but it seems buggy to me. As I said, older versions like v7.1.3.0 used to work until Garmin forced us to get an update.

Regards,

Javi

  • I am in the same boat, wanted to install GarminExpress in a virtual machine and no matter what I try it does not work...
I can honestly understand Garmin does not support Linux since the market is small but not supporting it being run in a virtual machine...

Seriously Garmin, I am so sick and tired of this, I paid over 600 euros for my device and you guys decide to make it completely useless...
Does not make any sense to me whatsoever because there is not snowball's chance in hell I will buy another Garmin device if I don't have any assurance I will be able to use it for as long as the device itself is functional...

  • Garmin Express 7.4.2.0 works fine in a Windows 10 Pro N Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.906) VirtualBox VM.

VirtualBox is 6.1.18 with VirtualBox 6.1.18 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack installed. VirtualBox Guest Additions 6.1.18 are installed in the guest.

The VM has the following hardware configuration:

  • I have the same problem on recently updated W10, version 20H2. Fortunately, I have another notebook with older W10 version 1803. This version of W10 is already out of the Microsoft service (no updates).  It appears,  Garmin Express v7.4.2.0 works on it. The only thing which I had to do, in order to update the map in  my navi, was to change the MTP Settings to Mass Storage, see in

So it is the problem of W10, not Garmin Express
