Express reports the new map will not fit on my 665LM

Recently I tried to update the maps on my old Zumo 665LM.  Despite removing all user data from the device, GE is reporting that the map will not fit in the internal storage (3.6Gb).  Is there a way to remove the old map to see if that will free space to install the new map?  I'm assuming the old map is just replaced, but???

The only alternative offered by GE is to install the map in two different regions, with only one region available at any time.  However, I ilve in IL, and the region dividing line is between IL and IN.  I ride both east and west of here.  I am not going to carry my laptop so I can stop and change regions by uploading different maps as I travel.  That's just ridiculous.  Is there any solution to this problem?
