Map installation on nüvi 2475LT leftovers

Last October I had a problem trying to install a map on my nuvi 2475LT and I got great advice from SUSSAMB here on how to fix the problem (Ref 5907739 if that is any help). Now I tried to install an updated map and I encountered the same problem as before. I think I have it solved now but I thought that the problem should not happen again.

Anyway, I find after updating the SD card in the .System folder there is a file .express. I don't know if I should delete it or copy it over to the nuvi. There is also a SQLite folder with a file in the .System folder and, again, I don't know if I should leave it on the SD card or move it to the nuvi, or just delete it.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

  • Would a factory reset solve the problem? Surely if it went back to its virgin state it would automatically update everything? The only problem might be that the original setup did not include lifetime updates. That I bought at a later stage.

The card was formatted to default settings as recommended on other sites. Fat 32.

  • You could try. It won't affect the lifetime map updates.

  • I have just done the reset and all it seems to do is erase user data. It did not take the unit back to the factory settings. It still shows the up-to-date European maps, both north and south. I only want the section covering the UK and Ireland. The rest is waste as I have no intention of ever driving on the continent.

  • May be waste but there is no way using Express to choose a smaller area if there is space for a larger area. Now some have reported forcing this to happen by removing the map and filling up the free space using other files, so that Express can't install the full map. The other way if you're not fussed about junction views would be to install the map to your PC using Express and then use MapInstall to install just the portion of the map you want to your device. Caveat on that is that while this is possible with devices that come with only one map I'm unsure whether it would work with yours which comes with two maps.

As for the reset I'm surprised as normally it resets user settings as well. If that didn't happen are you sure it was a master reset?

  • I followed the instructions I found which were to hold my finger in the bottom righthand corner while powering the unit on. The only option was to erase user data which I selected. I rebooted the unit and selected country and language and was amazed to find that all my favourites were still there. I would have considered them to be user data.

I then decided to try to download the map to my computer. The download to the computer failed so I couldn't try basecamp and/or mapinstall to get the map onto the SD card. When I had the blank SD card in there was no reference to the North American map being available.

I can live with the two European maps if only the system would perform properly and install the N American map to the SD card.

  • Favourites should have been deleted, although this will depend on how you installed them to your device.  If you sent them from BaseCamp and didn't delete the file sent then they will be reinstalled.

Did you get any messages about why the download to PC failed?  I have only rarely had that fail.

  • Favourites were saved by the system when I would put in an address or co-ordinates. I would select save to favourites or some such. I have never used BaseCamp to the best of my knowledge, maybe on a previous Garmin unit.

Now it seems Garmin Express recognises that the North American maps are installed even though they are on the SD card and I am not presented with the option to download/update. I select Map Details and then Map Options. I select the computer. When it starts I get a message asking to install Garmin Express Elevated Installer and I presume it installs. The message I get in a red panel is: There was an error installing updates.

  • Check the GPX folder on your device.  If there is anything other than current.gpx then that will be where your favourites are reappearing from.  BC can add .gpx files as can other programs so it may have happened without you recalling it.

As for the other problem see this FAQ support.garmin.com/.../

  • I had deleted the .gpx files a day or two ago. The \GPX folder has a nested folder \Archive which is empty and three files: 384398047.lpt - 9 bytes, Current.gpx, 26.2 KB; Current1.gpx, 2.02 MB.

I have installed Garmen Express on my laptop, hooked the nuvi to it and it is allowing  the download to the computer. Maybe I should stick with the laptop. When it is finished downloading I will replace the SD card with a blank one to see if it will update then.

  • I was able to download the North American map to my laptop! However, when it finished downloading I decided to try to download/install to the SD card. Same failure! I downloaded WebUpdater and BaseCamp. I am now using BaseCamp on the laptop to install the map to the nuvi + SD card. I think this is a much easier and safer way rather than the clone method.

This experience convinces me that there is a significant problem with the Garmin nuvi software and, from reading some other, relevant bulletin boards, it is not confined to the nuvi 2475LT only.

Again thanks for your assistance and patience.
