Garmin etrex 35 touch map updates

Hi just purchased a Garmin etrex 35 touch when connected to garmin express say there are updates for the maps but the unit does not have enough internal memory ans says use an sd card upto 32gb, if I do that it tells me that critical information is put onto the card and has to stay in the unit or it will not function if taken out. I already have the whole of GB 1:50k on another sd card but this does not have enough room to also put the unit up dates on, so will the unit still run if I update using another card if I want to use my card with the whole of the uk on it instead of the card with the updates .

  • Afraid this is the issue in buying maps on cards.  However it's likely that the message simply means that if you remove the card your Etrex won't be able to read the map you've updated, as its map files will be on the card, if you're swapping to your GB map the unit will work with that instead.

  • I downloaded the updates to a new card and after it had finished tried my full 1:50 UK map card in the device and it still works but the maps that came with the GPS do not so I can confirm the device will work with your old maps but to get the updated maps which came with the device you will have to used the card you downloaded them to.

  • This may or may not be of help to you. If Express gives you the option of installing the map to your PC you should then be able to install part of the map to your device, using either BaseCamp or MapInstall. Clearly this will depend on how much of the map you normally need.

I used to have to do this with my first GPS, an Etrex Legend H, it only had 24Mb of memory for maps!

Meant almost everytime I walked a new area I had to install another portion of the map Slight smile
