Nuvi 66LT won't update

I have a Garmin Nuvi 66LT that won't update. I connect it to Express and it is recognized. I click install and continue. Express says very briefly that it is preparing the map update then goes back to the main window and there is a red bar at the top that says "There was an error installing the update". Any thoughts on how to get it to update?

Before trying the steps in the FAQ check the internal memory isn't full.

I saw that and didn’t make a difference. Also my GPSMAP 66ST updates without a problem so I’m lead to believe it is a unit issue and not a computer issue.

On the second part, the internal memory is about 80mb, but I can't seem to find what is taking up so much space. Everything I can find is small amounts.

Is there a way to factory reset it?

That'll be the issue, you need to free up some space. Master reset could be done but probably won't help and easier to remove some files. I'd try removing all the text, voice, language, vehicle, help and keyboard files you don't need. Make a backup of all files in case you need them in future. That should enable you to update although you may also be prompted to install a sd card.

I backed up everything I thought I could and I get the same thing. I have an 8Gb card in it and it doesn’t ask to install to the card.

I agree that it looks like a space issue but I can’t seem to delete enough to make a difference.

How much free space did you create? If it's still not enough delete the .jcv file from the JCV folder, that will free up enough space. Note it's often best not to install the card until Express asks for it.

It freed up hardly any space. I don’t see any files that are very big. I thought I would see a large map file but not even that.

The larger files are in a hidden folder named .system

You need to set Windows to show hidden and system files, note that's 2 settings. If it still doesn't show and your device is in mtp mode set it to mass storage mode.
