Garmin Express on Windows 10 - can't do anything

Hi

I've a Garmin Nuvi and want to update the maps. I have a brand new laptop running Windows 10 64bit. I downloaded and installed Express 7.2.2, but when I run it nothing happens. I've tried many things:

  • Install - seems to install OK
  • Run - no window or service, but a process is started
  • Run as Admin - no window or service, but a process is started
  • Reboot and repeat, get the same
  • Un-install - it won't uninstall
  • Run an application to un-install it, it disappears from program list is still in Add/Remove Programs - click "uninstall" there and it just installs it again, no other option; run the stand-alone installer again and it says it's already installed
  • Reboot and repeat, get the same
  • Scream shout swear, write this post...

So I have a laptop on which I can't install, un-install or run express, so I can't update my maps. The last laptop broke, so I can't resurrect that  to try again, and shouldn't have to. I've checked the .NET pre-reqs, they're fine.

Thanks

  • Update - I've installed a thorough un-installer to remove Express, rebooted to repeat all the steps above, no change - the app still doesn't appear and plugging the device into every USB port does nothing. It is registered by Windows, I can see the drives and drivers, etc.

    Many thanks

  • You say you have a brand new laptop.  Is the Windows OS up to date or just as it came?  If so the first thing I'd try is to update to the latest Windows OS and then try again.

  • Hi - thanks for getting back to me. I've installed the latest updates (only one from a few days), now my windows version is 10.0.19041 Build 19041.

But that seems to have made it worse. Express is not in my add/remove programs list, and the un-installer I used last time can't find it, but there's a folder in Program Files (x86) still, a bunch of registry keys, and the installer says it can't install as the app is already installed...

    Your help is much appreciated.

  • On the technical side of things I'm unable to help but, my build is 19042.685 and GE is working. Hope you can get it sorted.

I have a similar problem using a desktop Windows 10 PC. This is fully up to date.. All I get is the Garmin Express GUI when starting it up and the disc drive light flashes for a while but nothing happens. Control-Alt-Delete indicates no apps running. Have uninstalled and reinstalled twice but no change. It doesn't look like anyone has a solution for this!

  • Most don't have any issues so your best bet is to contact Product Support for detailed help on your system.

I'm having the same issue with a 3 day old computer.  Garmin support was unable to help nor was Microsoft.  I have hours tied up into this and can't get my watch updated.

  • Same problem for me. I'm using a laptop with Windows 10 installed. Garmin Express shows nothing, although I can see the process in the Task Manager. I have to kill the process and restart Garmin Express, and it can just start randomly.

I seem to have fixed my problem by going to my firewall and allowing express.exe to receive incoming data.
