Garmin Express Download Cleanup

I noticed recently that Garmin Express was taking up over 30gb of hard drive space on my computer and that this was predominately caused by Garmin retaining old downloads for the application and maps. I think it would be a reasonable thing to delete old map files once new ones had been updated.

For example: Map_Map.ActiveUS.2020.20 may mean that I don't need to keep Map_Map.ActiveUS.2019.10 anymore (or 2019.20 and 2020.10 too)

  • LOL I just did the same on my PC today. I wanted to post a bug report here and found yours. :-) Exactly as you said, I've been having Garmin Express syncing with 945 for 1 year. Garmin folder in C:\ProgramData was consuming over 30 GB. All of it were old maps and previous versions of the application.

Please update GC on Windows to clean up old files properly.

  • You can manually delete old maps without causing any issues.

  • I'm aware that this can be done manually, however many end-users are having a lot of space taken up without ever being aware that these "temporary" files are not being removed. On many SSDs 30Gb+ represents a considerable fraction of your available free space. Therefore this is not a useful feature.

  • Users might not even be aware that Garmin Express uses so much disk space. I was not aware until I run disk usage analysis.
