Windows 10 Oregon 450 USB not recognized at all - please help

Hello,
I've recently bought a new laptop (Lenovo TP E15, Windows 10 Professional), after my old computer stopped working. Sadly, my trusted Oregon 450 is not recognized at all when connected.

Relevant initial setting: laptop is fully updated (Microsoft and OEM). Made sure all 3 USB ports (2 USB 3 ports and one legacy USB 2 port) are fully functional and backward compatible (I used an old 5GB Cruzer USB key to test them).
I Tested multiple mini USB cables (the original short Garmin Cable, one long Canon Cable and another Generic cable).
Oregon Software version is 6.60 (updated a while ago on the old computer, as far as I know there were no further updates).
Installed the latest Garmin USB drivers 2.3.1.2, and latest Garmin express and WebUpdater (along with basecamp) - none of them recognize the oregon as stated initally windows did not recognize it.
Internal batteries are fully charged, I've also tried w/ and w/o internal maps 1 GB memory card.
I've tried multiple combinations of connecting the device w/o any of the above software open, and also tested both Garmin interface modes (Spanner and serial) throughout the above.
Basically I've followed all the troubleshooting steps from the support site:

https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=gpMBSJGUlZ2BbaR45HyZZ5

and

https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=N2rVCrXKrt4XY2t3QvQZU8

(Including the steps for trying to force the device to map the USB mass storage drive - to no avail)

Sometimes, what I actually see on screen is the prompt for USB mass storage device - I answer yes;
Windows beeps once (acknowledged that something was connected), but then the Oregon skips the image of the computer and device, starts  loading regulatory...
Windows in the meantime gives the sound as if something went wrong (no error message) and nothing is displayed.
I can also see in the device manager, when I initially plugged it in that it refreshes automatically (i.e recognized something was connected)
but after the 2nd sound it refreshes again and nothing new is displayed.

I've approached the Chat tech support, and explained all the above - a solution was not forthcoming and all in all I was told that the device is eligible for a trade-in.

In addition, as a short comparison I also gave it a quick "plug and prey" on a friend's laptop (he's not a techie, just has some windows 10 laptop) -  and it also didn't recognize it,though I wasn't able to try all the above saga on his laptop.

So all in all I'm now really stuck, and the problem  being that I live in Israel, and tech support advised that a trade-in should be followed via Garmin Europe.
I'm not so sure that this could be done from where I live - even if somehow I were to send the device to somewhere in Europe, flights are intermittent due to Covid19 issues
and the entire country is just about to enter a lengthy lock-down this weekend.

I would really like to try and get my old trusted device to work again on my new windows 10 laptop.
Has anyone experienced issues like this in windows 10? is there maybe some workaround to get windows to recognize the Garmin properly?

Help is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

  • You appear to have tried everything I would have suggested so the likelihood is a faulty port on your Oregon, particularly as it wasn't recognised on 2 laptops. I assume the device still functions so is there any specific reason why you need to connect it to your laptop?

  • Well, I liked to edit my planned hiking routes on base camp, save the itinerary for the records and such...

Basically what you' reckoned is what the tech support guy also guessed, He also mentioned something on the line that you're referring to, be it that the device is working albeit with somewhat limited functionality (as a stand-alone only).

So I understand that there's nothing more to be done about it and I should either use it as is or get a new one when possible...

I guess that settles it then ;-|...

    Thanks for the advice.

  • You can still use BaseCamp to send routes etc to your device by sending them to a sd card then putting the card in your Oregon

  • Hmmm.... haven't thought of that - by default I have a 1gb internal micro SD card set with my country's topo maps inserted in the device...

I think I need to play around with it next time I plan to out on excursion (circumstances and Covid19 given),

and see if I can transfer my plans to and from the device using this card (the only suitable micro-SD card at my disposable)...

I shall check if it works properly,

    thanks for the advice!
