Garmin Express filled my hard drive up

Just an FYI for others, and for Garmin to hopefully fix this.

I don't install much on my C drive.  It's a 128GB solid state...large apps, docs, games go on other drives.  I was trying to figure out how this drive somehow managed to fill up and cause my computer to slow down and become unstable.  After manually searching every directory, I found that this Garmin folder, specifically the maps directory for my Garmin Edge has been retaining EVERY SINGLE download it has ever performed.  So around 7.5GB for every version of the maps that had historically been released.

C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map

The entire Garmin directory was somewhere over 35GB of data.

  • It's deliberate so that either updating multiple devices or reinstalling maps doesn't require a redownload of the data used to create the files needed for your device. You can always delete them if they aren't required.
