Garmin Express Won't Update Map or Software

I updated Garmin Express to the latest version available for a PC running Windows 10 last night and a different PC running Windows 7 today and then sync'ed my Garmin Edge 1000, S/N 3F5287306. After the sync, Garmin Express indicated that Routable Cycle Map of the US and Time Zone Map updates were available for my device:

Routable Cycle Map of the US
Version: 2020.10
File Size: 7.86 GB
Installation Time: 3 hours

Time Zone Map
Version: 24.00
File Size: 585.22 kB
Installation Time: 1 minute

I started the installation of the Routable Cycle Map of the US last night and let it run overnight. When I got up this morning, Garmin Express was still trying to prepare the device for installation.

I moved the device to my older PC running Windows 7 and tried to install the Time Zone Map. After a couple hours, Garmin Express was still trying to prepare the device for installation.

The device only has about 800 MB of free memory. Inspecting the folders, I don't see any large files. I suspect, given the size of the map, the old map is using almost all of the memory.

How do I get Garmin Express to complete the installation?

  • 800Mb should be ample,  have you tried deleting the device from Express then re-adding it? Having done so try the update again.

  • I deleted the device and added it following Garmin Express instructions. However, now it stalls after I enter my Connect username and password to sign in.

  • I have an Garmin watch that required sign-in that I was able to add as a new device so I think the problem preventing me from adding the Edge 1000 is specific to the device and not Garmin Express. Looking like I need to do a Factory Reset next unless someone has a better idea.

  • Still can´t update the Maps on my FR945. Garmin Express always stucks at 22,8% and only one .img is downloaded. I´ve tried already different Laptops, uninstall/install Garmin Express, disable Antivirus/Firewall. I´m also using the latest Version of Garmin Express.

    other suggestions?

  • I never got a chance to do the factory reset of my Edge 1000. When I decided to try that, Garmin Express indicated an update was available. After updating Garmin Express 7.0.0.0 with 7.0.1.0, it started working. I was able to sync my Edge and update its maps.

The update did indicate that my Edge did not have enough internal memory and warned that the map update would be installed on its MicroSD card and that my Edge wouldn’t work without its MicroSD card anymore. I ended up buying the maximum sized MicroSD card supported by my Edge before doing that.

Another complication was that Garmin Express triggered my McAfee Anti-Virus software during installation so I had to disable my Firewall for the install to finish.

Boy, I swear, nothing is easy with regards to Garmin software. Never has been and I’ve been using their devices for 20 years. I must be a glutton for punishment.

  • Strange how some folks have issues, yet for others, myself included, Express always updates simply and works without issue.
