Lifetime update does not now work on XP

I purchased a lifetime map update for my Nuvi 1310 some time ago and have updated it without problems a few times  from my laptop running Windows XP . I came to update today and it has stopped working. Garmin support says basically that i now need to change my o/s to enable me to use the update. I am not happy as i purchased the lifetime updates and now am told i need to spend a lot more to buy a new pc,  or o/s. I don't really use the pc anymore apart from updating the satnav, so i don't want to go to this expense just to perform this one function.

Are there any ways to work round this issue?

  • Try a friends possibly?  Even Win7 is no longer supported so you can't expect Garmin to continue supporting XP.

  • Lets be fair here, you can't expect Garmin to support Windows 7 when Microsoft don't even support it now.

Doing an inplace upgrade isn't difficult, you may even be able to get a free license key upgrade, if you can't it's not that expensive to get an upgrade and honestly, Windows 10 is a lot more stable and reliable than Windows 7.

  • If you thought Win 7 was bad,  is trying to get it to work on XP.

  • Sorry, I knew that, I even went to the MS website to get the XP EOL date, I'm so used to writing Windows 7 as that's in my VDI environment that it was muscle memory response.

Well, yes i do expect Garmon to honour a transaction that was actually quite expensive at the time. I don't really expect to have to pay more to continue to use something that i have already paid for. I can understand not being able to do a new installation of express on an older o/s, but existing users should still be able to continue using the product  that they had already bought and been using for some time.

  • You're not having to pay for something you've already paid for.  You still have lifetime updates.  Microsoft no longer support XP, the world has moved on.  You can't expect Garmin to continue to support long outdated operating systems. Incidentally there are ways to get Win10 free if you have a licence on an older PC, whether yours will run Win10 is another matter but try googling 'Win10 update for free'.
