Unable to Update Maps - Out of Memory

I have updated the maps on my eTrex Touch 35t several times in the past, but my last attempt failed stating that there was not enough memory.

Garmin Express suggests to install a blank microSD card, which I did, but I then get a warning that my eTrex will not work in future without the microSD card installed.

As I use several of the (very expensive) TOPO maps on microSD cards and the eTrex can only hold one microSD card at once, I appear to be stuck.

Is there any way to update the maps in the situation above?

  • Well you could install the map to your PC then use BaseCamp to only send a portion of the map to your Etrex?

  • Thanks for the suggestion, but that seems to be a temporary work around - how can I update the map if it is installed to my PC?

The eTrex35t has 8GB of internal memory, which should surely be enough to update a map and, if not, it should be able to use the microSD card as temporary memory.

  • Express will update the maps on your PC as well. 8Gb would normally be enough but it depends what else you have loaded.

It will use the card but as you want to use other cards that's not an option for you.

  • Hmm - Garmin Express shows there is an update for TopoActive Europe v2019.10 of 7.67GB.

Basecamp shows that the eTrex has TopActive Europe East v4 and TopoActive Europe West v4 installed.

Perhaps the Europe East and West maps have been combined into one map, which would explain why I cannot update the eTrex?

Garmin Express does not list my PC as a device - how do I copy the maps to the PC?

  • Look for Installation options, you should have the choice of device, PC or both

  • I've seen those instructions, but I do not get any installation options.

I have also tried copying the TopoActive map files from the /Garmin folder on the eTrex to a /Garmin folder on a 32GB microSD card plugged into the PC. JaVaWa sees the microSD card and files, but Basecamp says "An error occurred when attempting to use the TopoActive Europe v4 East Map Product"

  • Not sure what's happening but what should work is this, use Express to install the updated map to the sd card in your device.  Once you've done that check the map shows on your device, if it does try that card with BaseCamp to ensure it works.  Once you've updated the map run Express again when you should get the option to install it to your PC.  Note Express won't offer an option to install a map to your PC unless you've updated the map, it can't transfer your originally installed map to your PC for BaseCamp to use.

  • Yes, but I cannot update the map to the microSD in my eTrex because the eTrex will then not work without that microSD card and I need to be able to use various TOPO Pro maps I've purchased on other microSD cards...

  • I wasn't suggesting you do, but update to the sd card first. Then rerun Express and install the map to your PC then use BaseCamp to install part of the map to your device. If you do that you can then put your other sd cards into the device as required.

  • ..but I cannot update the  microSD card.

If I put the microSD card in the eTrex, I get a message stating "Critial files are going to loaded to this memory card, so it must remain in your device at all times (even after the update). If the card is removed, your device will not work."

If I put the mircoSD card in my PC, neither Garmin Express nor Basecamp gives me the option to update the maps on the card.
