Current Problem with Garmin Camper 770LMT-D Map Updates

Hello. I am a newcomer, so forgive me if I am not up to speed with forum protocol.

Last week I threw my TomTom1005 Camper into the bin, following a two month 'discussion' with TomTom support staff. Not yet 4 years old, and unrepairable.

I then went out and purchased a Garmin 770LMT-D Camper device.

It would not update maps, either via my PC or using wifi.

For three days I tried, but despite having the 6.13.1.0 version of Express loaded, all attempts to update failed at 49.9%, with another 1 hour 52 minutes download time predicted.

I took it back to Halfords, along with a small %(68 pages worth) of the error log .

The log seemed to indicate that my device was not a Garmin product ?????

The sales assistant fiddled about with it, for 20 minutes or so, then said that he would obtain another device for me, as the one they had sold to me was faulty.

I collected the replacement device yesterday, and after 24 hours of buggering about, I am still devoid of updated maps.

Late this morning (Tuesday 26th April) I rang Garmin and spoke with a very pleasant chap who informed me that Garmin was experiencing some "problems" with map updates for the 770 Camper.

He said that it should all be sorted in a day or two.

I don't know whether or not to believe him ?

He asked that I send some "bumff", via a link in Express, so that they could have a shuffti at what was going on. This I did.

Regardless, I then rang Halfords and explained the situation. They told me that if I was still unable to download the latest map by Thursday next, I could have a refund, or I could have a refund right now if I so desired.

I told them that I would hang on for a couple of days to see if Garmin had sorted anything out.

Having had a quick blimp at other posts in various Forums, it would seem that this is a vexatious, ongoing issue, which supposedly should have been fixed by the latest update to Express.

If I make no further contributions then you know that the issue is unresolved and I have claimed a refund, from Halford's.

I don't know what to try next, as I have no desire to return to TomTom ?

Any suggestions ?

I have always been quite suited with the Michelin map layout, scales and colouring, but if and when I get a chance I will have a look at the ADAC maps you suggest.
They are not available at high street retailers in the UK, or at least I don't think they are, (maybe Waterstones), but they may be available on line from an outfit called "The Map Shop".
Meanwhile, I wonder why Garmin did not organise the 770 in such a way that when it is connected to a PC the battery is charged ?
My two previous TomToms (730, 1005) both charged in that fashion, but this will only charge when connected via the car 12volt socket or by using a mains charger (not supplied).
  • All Garmin devices will charge to some extent when connected to your PC, the issue is the amount of power some usb ports supply, in many cases they struggle simply to keep up!

    Ok, thanks for that.
Any specific mains charger required, or will any Garmin charger do the job? There does seem to be a plethora of different chargers knocking about on the Internet, but non specifically for the 770LMT-D ?
While I'm here can anyone clarify the speed camera issue for me ?
Reading the operators manual there is very little about the topic, and what there is seems to indicate that it is a 'paid for' option that requires a regular subscription, and that one must link one's mobile phone to the device in order to avail oneself of the service.
But I took the device out for a drive over the weekend, and all the cameras that I passed were duly identified by the device.
So, is this some sort of update, or is it just a free taster for 'x' number of days when the device is first used/registered, or am I just a confused simpleton, and have misunderstood the various gubbins I have read in the manual and on the internet.
I have to admit that some information seems very old, so it maybe incorrect in respect of newer devices.
    Any ideas?
  • In UK I believe all new devices come with a camera database. To keep receiving updates you need a subscription.

As for mains charger any one that is a usb style charger will work.
  • Re: Garmin cameras

It's a paid subscription that keeps this information up to date.

    https://www.garmin.com/uk/extras-camera-alerts

(It's available via Garmin Express in the menus somewhere)

    But:

    * You get (some? dated?) information about cameras when you buy a device (which you now know). Not sure how old it is though, might be matching the original map dates' (so: 2017). You can check it in 'about' menu in your satnav.
    * Although information seems changing daily / weekly for some regions, you really can safely assume that you will be fine for some time going forward
    * Once your subscription finishes (if you had one), latest information is left on the device

I just decided not to renew the subscription myself as Garmin had numerous issues with it over the last year or so. I do not travel so extensively either.

You could link your satnav with your phone via app and get cameras this way - but (in my view) it really defeats the need of having a satnav in the first place. Plus all other concerns re data & tariff etc. you already raised above.

To be perfectly honest chaps, as an old codger, in his dotage, I find the whole issue very confusing.

Technology is moving at a far faster pace than that with which I can keep up !

To that end I have posed a couple of question, on a couple of relevant topics, to the very nice support people at Garmin HQ ?

Each time I have asked a question they have replied within 24 hours, (which is something that TomTom never managed to do), and the answers were pretty concise.

    Here is the first answer:
    Good Morning,
    Thank you for your email.
Please see the relevant article for
">Device Displays the Message "The attached cable cannot currently charge your device."">Device Displays the Message "The attached cable cannot currently charge your device."
In the link to the website, you will need to click on adapters. I have included the link so it will go straight to the charger. ">https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/pn/010-11478-05">https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/pn/010-11478-05

That answered my question fully, I am now clued -up, and I know exactly which charger to purchase.

    Here is the second answer:
    Hi ,
Thank you for your email. To answer your question, the safety camera subscription and how it is used is determined by the letters at the end of the model name. In this case, your device is a Camper 770 LMT-D (Lifetime Maps and Traffic through Digital cable). This means it won't require a smartphone to link through bluetooth to get traffic updates, those are for LMT-S devices.
Your device does not need a subscription as it came with a lifetime safety camera subscription, so no further purchases are required. And finally, the reason why your Camper 770 was given alerts is because it is preinstalled software, you need not download it as an extra. The subscription is referring to future updates to Speed Camera information which is rolled out on Garmin Express every 2-3 weeks.
    Kind regards,
    Cameron

So it seems that technology moves at so fast a pace that the printed User Manuals, (or even those on line), can't keep up. Now I know that I need not bother about the mobile pone link business, and that my speed camera updates are "built-in".

One happy customer. Others may find those links (above) useful.
    :)
