Current Problem with Garmin Camper 770LMT-D Map Updates

Hello. I am a newcomer, so forgive me if I am not up to speed with forum protocol.

Last week I threw my TomTom1005 Camper into the bin, following a two month 'discussion' with TomTom support staff. Not yet 4 years old, and unrepairable.

I then went out and purchased a Garmin 770LMT-D Camper device.

It would not update maps, either via my PC or using wifi.

For three days I tried, but despite having the 6.13.1.0 version of Express loaded, all attempts to update failed at 49.9%, with another 1 hour 52 minutes download time predicted.

I took it back to Halfords, along with a small %(68 pages worth) of the error log .

The log seemed to indicate that my device was not a Garmin product ?????

The sales assistant fiddled about with it, for 20 minutes or so, then said that he would obtain another device for me, as the one they had sold to me was faulty.

I collected the replacement device yesterday, and after 24 hours of buggering about, I am still devoid of updated maps.

Late this morning (Tuesday 26th April) I rang Garmin and spoke with a very pleasant chap who informed me that Garmin was experiencing some "problems" with map updates for the 770 Camper.

He said that it should all be sorted in a day or two.

I don't know whether or not to believe him ?

He asked that I send some "bumff", via a link in Express, so that they could have a shuffti at what was going on. This I did.

Regardless, I then rang Halfords and explained the situation. They told me that if I was still unable to download the latest map by Thursday next, I could have a refund, or I could have a refund right now if I so desired.

I told them that I would hang on for a couple of days to see if Garmin had sorted anything out.

Having had a quick blimp at other posts in various Forums, it would seem that this is a vexatious, ongoing issue, which supposedly should have been fixed by the latest update to Express.

If I make no further contributions then you know that the issue is unresolved and I have claimed a refund, from Halford's.

I don't know what to try next, as I have no desire to return to TomTom ?

Any suggestions ?

  • You'll see here https://forums.garmin.com/forum/garmin-express/garmin-express-mac/1467220-unable-to-update-maps-on-camper770 that you're not alone. As you've just bought the device I'd simply use it and wait until Garmin resolve the issue, map updates generally don't make much difference from one to the next, although over time the changes mount up so you're then more likely to be affected. Issues like this in the past that have been device specific are generally resolved quickly.

    Hi Monty,

Just wanted to share your misery.
I just got my new 770LMT-D after canning my TomTom 1005 Caravan for the same reason you gave experienced- just to walk into a similar issue here.

Plus the fact that I have a standard TomTom 1005 as backup which I do not intend to update in the future.

hopefully Garmin will be looking to demonstrate vendors reliability

    regards
  • Shared misery is handy, sometimes Schaefer, old chap, At least I know that I am not the only fellow that has been on the wrong end of TomTom's 1005 Camper. It seems that the periodicity of "built-in-obsolescence" is getting a lot shorter in the domain of SatNav manufacturers. :(

People, who are far more knowledgeable than I, keep on telling me to download an App for my smart phone; Waze (or maybe Wazzok) I think it is called. Seemingly it is equally as good as any designated SatNav device, and much cheaper to purchase. I have to respond to such people by informing them that my smart phone is not very smart (like me) and is a PAYG cheap job for emergency use only. It is not for taking selfies, or telling the wife and/or girl friend that I am on my way home from the chip shop. If I wanted to use it with a navigational app I would have to sign up to a contract and more than likely lash out on a new phone,.to boot. :o

Regardless, one can not input the height, width, length and weight of a motorhome into a navigational app. I will not be linking my 'slightly smart' phone to this Garmin device either,...……… if indeed I deign to retain it. It may well be back at Halfords come Friday.

I just want a device that shows me how to get from "A" to "B" using current mapping. I tour the continent on a pretty regular basis, and my wife can not read the Michelin Road Atlas for love nor money; and me being a typical bloke can not multi-task; I can not read a map and drive at the same time, ...……… the wife doesn't drive either.. :p

Thanks for that reassurance Sussamb, but having had some recent dire experiences with the TomTom Support people, I have little faith in anything being sorted out 'quickly" by anybody in this SatNav business.

Reading between the lines in all my communications with TomTom it was obvious that they were aware that their update had screwed up the Camper unit, but seeing as how it was an "old" device, I am assuming that they were not prepared to fix the problem, and b******s to all their customers ?

Just using the Garmin 770 device with an outdated map is fine, up to a point, when one expects the update issue to be resolved soon.

If I had owned this 770 unit for some time, I would, I suppose, do just that, but seeing as how I have just purchased it, and it does not" do what it says on the tin", then I may well return it if things are not resolved PDQ.
  • Well of course you could but if you want a satnav why would you? The installed map isn't likely to be well out of date, and, unlike it seems with TomTom, when this has happened before on other devices, very infrequently I must add, it's been resolved quickly.
  • Having read the above (nice job!), having checked the other thread referenced here and having had a look at the device you bought I dare say this: do not give up, it's the typical issue that Garmin introduces every now and then their end - I believe it's this: MD5 checksum of the component that needs downloading to your device does not match the ones referenced in the manifest files. Which is a silly mistake and does not require much in order to be fixed.

And it will get resolved - perhaps not until this Friday though.

What's the version of the map currently in the device? It's possibly few months old. So I concur with Sussamb here: stick to it as regardless of such infrequent nonsense these devices are very good and - most importantly - do work on their own as opposed to various apps that rely on GSM infrastructure.
  • When I check 'Settings' - 'Map & Vehicle' - "My Maps", there are 5 "Tick-Boxes", all complete with a green tick. They are:-

    CN Europe NTU 2017.30 Parkopedia

    CN Europe NTU 2017.30 Foursquare

CN Europe NTU 2017.30 All South

CN Europe NTU 2017.30 All North

    Europe DEM

As a layman, that would appear to indicate that the maps are well out of date, rather than being fairly recent ?

If the fact is that they are indeed 2 years out of date, then I suppose I have a problem that is not easily resolved ?

If the maps were recent, then I would assume that they would be identified as 2018, or maybe even 2019.

If Garmin carry out map updates 3 times every year this damn thing could be at least 4 updates behind the times.
  • You are correct on all accounts, except one.

Maps are indeed 2 years old: were probably included with the device when it was made and are (as usual) subject to recurrent updates until it's deemed that device reached its EoL (what does that mean exactly is another matter entirely) - and most likely are just the same as the ones for any other automotive device.

But it does not mean that there is a problem with them or an update ever since - it's most likely something that's been introduced rather lately and impacts these only devices and only now. I distinctively remember updating to 2019.30 EU maps myself on my nuvicam and that was very smooth and rather uneventful process.

So my recommendation is to give it time and wait until Garmin fixes it and it starts working again. And to hassle Garmin Support directly, via phone, if you're in a rush.

  • Following further communications with Garmin support; late on Wednesday a software fix was made available for downloading.
Yesterday morning I downloaded the fix, and watched as the software update was downloaded, then as the map update software was downloaded and installed.
When it passed the 49.9% point without a hitch I was pretty sure that the problem was solved.
That proved to be the case, and my 770 is now up and running with a fully up to date set of maps.
The Download/Update took about 1 hour.

Whether it was my enquiry/problem that lead to this latest update, or maybe they were going to do it anyway, I don't know, but verily, it has been fixed by Friday.:)
  • Well done to you - and: happy motoring with your new toy. I sincerely trust you won't be disappointed.

And pop in here if having troubles again.

PS On the subject of old-fashioned maps: I'm cartography aficionado myself and can't help but notice that Michelin maps are rather illegible. I find that ADAC maps are miles better.

Try to see this one if you have a chance: Großer ADAC Autoatlas 2019/2020 - it's quite bulky (1400 pages!)! and in lingo - but definitely worth its price.

(Or any ADAC camping maps as you see them fit)
