Update map on PC without device & later transfer to device?

Hi, I have a nüvi® 2599LMT-D with lifetime map updates. When I update the maps (while in UK), it can take many, many hours to complete (sometimes over 20 hours, even when connected to a fast broadband connection), and this has sometimes caused me problems if I need to go out at short notice and need the satnav while it is still connected to the laptop with "do not disconnect" messages. So: is it possible to update the maps on my PC, before even plugging in the satnav, and only when I get a success message from the PC then, at that point, connect the satnav to let the PC transfer the maps to the device - hopefully a much quicker process than doing the entire thing?
I can see there is an option to download the maps to the computer within the garmin express software, but if I do that does it allow a direct transfer across from the computer to the device, or is that just to allow me to browse them on my laptop, and any update to the device will still be done entirely from garmins agonizingly slow servers?
Thanks!
  • Yes you can install the map to your PC without device connected, but that's only the map. Your nuvi neds numerous other files so unless you want problems you should connect it to update the map via Express.

Not sure though why the download takes so long unless your ISP is slowing it, my EU map update completes in around 30 minutes.
  • Thanks, Sussamb. Point noted about the other files - but they are usually quite small in size, so maybe still requiring less time when one needs the satnav physically connected to the computer (if I pre-download the map to my laptop)? Or not?
Regarding the slow speed - it's not always that slow, but mostly. And it is most definitely not just for me. In searching for an answer to this question (before I asked it), I came across many, many people commenting on forums about how turgidly slow and painful garmin updates are! In the UK, in US etc... I spent a lot of time looking for anyone who found a reliable solution to make them faster, saw lots of speculation, but no definite solutions.
  • Many people may complain but hundreds of thousands have no such issue and it's generally an ISP issue for those that do. Transferring the map from your PC will mean no junction views for example, so you should use Express and download the 'map' in one go, it's the only way to get that and other files.
