Map Download using Garmin Express?

I have a Edge Touring Plus, with a map of Europe that is promised to be updated twice a year, by means of Garmin Express
Today I used Garmin Express (latest version) to update my Garmin Edge Touring Plus to map Europe (EU) 2018-20.

After the updating and reconnecting the Edge Touring Plus to Garmin Express (only half an hour later) again. GE keeps nagging me to update the map.
Connecting to basecamp I notice that only the EU North East map 2018-20 is on the Touring Plus.

Is this normal behavior?
Where is the EU South East map 2018-20?

As I do not understand what is actually happening here, I hope someone is able to explain me what happens & how to rectify my maps...
Thank you very much!
  • That's probably why Express is saying you still have a map update. Try running it again.
  • Thanks for your answer! I followed your advise and tried to update the Edge Touring with Express. Had to do it twice as Express kept telling me the Map in the Edge Touring needed to be updated.
Finally after the second update cycle, Express acknowledged the Edge Touring is up to date.
Now I start up Basecamp. It is busy with "installing" gmapprom. In the mean time Express signals me that the Edge Touring needs to be updated again
After "installing" gmapprom BaseCamp changes the name gmapprom into "Garmin Cycle Map, North East, 2018-20". It subsequently started to configure it.
This takes extremely long! Finally BaseCamp only shows the "Garmin Cycle Map, North East, 2018-20" map on my edge touring device.
  • It'll take a while at first as Basecamp has to index the maps, after that it will be much quicker
  • Dear Sussamb, Thanks again for your reply!. Express told me again that the Edge touring is not up-to-date. So updated it again (third time in succession). After updating Express showed that the Edge touring is up to date. Connected Edge touring to Basecamp. It took again a very long time to "install" Garmin Cycle Map EU, North East, 2018-20, from gmapprom. Still the South West map is missing.... Express after reconnecting the Edge touring again, says the map needs to be updated. Does it keep updating the same map over and over? I don't understand the behavior of the Edge Touring / Express & Basecamp combination.

  • This is a bug (Express bug? Garmin bug? Map bug?) that seems affecting all hand-held devices & wearables that consume this map (Topo / Touring etc. UE 2018.20).

It's been 2 months since I spotted it myself - and detailed lecture of this forum exposes others encountering the same problem.

Garmin Support despite me chasing them very recently is still unable to advise what's the ETA to get this resolved. And: what's the root cause of this problem.
  • Dear Krzemien,
    Thanks for your feedback!
So it is a bug already known at Garmin.
I assume Garmin is working to solve the problem.

    Regards, PJ
  • I would have hoped so...!

I actually was quite surprised to see Topo EU maps on my Oregon 750t flagged as 'to be updated' as I expected these to remain static. So I'm not in a rush and can patiently await for this bug to be properly addressed. Still, I can't help but wonder why does it take so long.
  • Updated to Garmin Express 6.12.0.0. When connecting my Edge Touring, GE signaled the map needed updating to Europe Routable Cycle Map 2018.20. Did so.
After updating the map, switched on the Edge Touring. It loaded the map and found the satellites. Switched off the edge touring and connected it to the PC again.
GE signaled the map needs updating to 2018.20 again....
Conclusion would be that the GE update to 6.12.0.0 did not solve this (buggy) behavior....
  • Updated Garmin Express to 6.13.1.0. GE still persistently signals the availability of update Europe Routable Cycle Map 2018.20.
Connected Edge Touring to BaseCamp. It appears that both South West and North East maps 2018.20 are now present in the Edge Touring.
I don't know what triggered this, as since last time (only one of the maps avaiable) no update has been made via GE.
    Strange behavior...
  • That's what I had to do to get around my own problem:

    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/garmin-express/garmin-express-pc/1451658-topo-active-update-2018-20?p=1467463#post1467463

Boils down to the removal of garmindevice.xml which is then recreated by GE. Worth giving it a try in my opinion.
