Blocked from English Language update on new NuviCam due to "Not Enough Space" error

Brand new factory sealed NuviCam.

Simply want to update.

Ran update, it updated maps, then I went to finish by installing the English Language update which is 471 mb, and I get an error that there isn't enough internal storage.

I have a 64 gig card inserted for video, and a 32 gig card inserted for maps. Both are Sandisk Extreme Pro cards.

Contacted support. They told me that the English Language update can ONLY be installed to Internal Storage, and to delete all language folders in Internal Storage under "Help" except American English and that would free enough space.

It didn't. Even after deleting all of the folders that support told me to, I only have 242 megs free on Internal Storage and I need 471.

I have now learned that unlike the TomTom software which allows users to move maps to the SD card, Garmin does not. What I now read that I was supposed to have done is "tricked" the Garmin Express software by filling up the Garmin internal storage with garbage files so that it would be forced to use the SD card. How could I have known to do such a ridiculous step as a new user?

I did some searching and found instructions to use "Garmin Map Updater" to re-install only a region of the maps to the Garmin, then fill Internal Storage with garbage files, then use Garmin Express to install the full maps and it would use the SD card, then I could delete the garbage files. Garmin Map Updater however blocked me, giving me options to exit, go to Garmin.com (REAL useful), or enter a product key. To find the product key for the currently installed map, I'm supposed to go to https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myMapsHome.htm. Unfortunately, it does not give me a product key. This is what I instead see.

So, I guess I am now completely screwed out of this English Language update until the next map update, at which point I guess I could do the garbage file trick to force the Nuvicam to use the SD card, and pray it works.

The fact that there isn't a "Move maps to SD card" function in the software is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

I see now I have made a mistake switching from TomTom to Garmin.

    Troubleshooting attempted so far:

    - Went into diagnostic mode (upper right on Volume screen for 10 seconds) and set MTP settings to "Mass Storage." Connected NuviCam with 64 GB SD card in Video slot and 32 GB SD card in Map slot to computer. I do get three drives connected, one for Internal storage, and one for each card. Verified that they work and files can be copied to and from all three drives.

    - Plan: Backup and delete one .sid file from .System\SID on Internal Storage to free enough space for English Language update. Run English Language update, then use map reinstall option. Hopefully it will say there is not enough space, and use the SD card.

Did not work. Moved the .sid file, English language update progress bar goes across for a few minutes, then get green update success message. However, Internal Storage shows the exact same free space after the update. Exiting and restarting Garmin Express shows the English Language update is still available. It should not show as available if the update was really successful. So this update didn't really get installed, probably because of the removed .sid file. Moved .sid file back to .System\SID folder. (Hopefully that didn't hurt anything.)

    Not tried yet:

    - Backup and delete all .sid files from .System\SID, then copy garbage/junk files to Internal Storage to consume free space until there is ~10-20 megs free. Then use map reinstall option, hoping it will prompt to use the card.

    - Wait for next map update. When update is available, copy garbage/junk files to Internal Storage to consume free space until there is ~10-20 megs free. Then run update, hoping it will prompt to use the card.

Question regarding the above: Since the maps are now updated on Internal Storage to the point that there are only 242 megs free, will installing the maps to the SD card (provided I can get that function to actually work) **remove** the maps from Internal Storage? Or will Internal Storage now be forever occupied, thus blocking the English Language update?

    - Return the device to the vendor and exchange for a new one, copy garbage/junk files to Internal Storage to consume free space until there is ~10-20 megs free. Then run update, hoping it will prompt to use the card.

Checked into this, no longer possible. The Nuvicam is discontinued, and the vendor has no more units available for exchange.

Garmin Express is advertised as being able to "manage" the device, but so far, I see little "management." I can't tell it to use the card, I can't move maps, I can only let it decide how it's going to use available space, and it FAILED. Without knowing to copy junk files onto Internal Storage to consume space (because the software does not allow the user to specify the SD card be used for updates), Garmin Express consumes Internal Storage without consideration for leaving enough space available for other updates, like the English language update, that can only be installed on Internal Storage, thus BLOCKING the user from such updates.

I spent this entire Sunday evening on this instead of being with my family. The NuviCam is going to go in a car I am finishing with refurbishing this week, and I have the Garmin reverse camera scheduled to be installed. I wanted this device completely updated and ready. Instead, right out of the factory new box, simply installing the latest version of Garmin Express and running it, I am now BLOCKED from being able to install the FULL update.

This is the update I can't install:

After opening Garmin Express and clicking on my device, I click on "Tools & Content":

I then scroll down to "Optional Updates" and open the "Language Files" drop down, and select the 471 mb English Language update:

But I can't install it. I installed Garmin Express, connected the NuviCam with a 64 GB SD card for video and 32 GB SD card for maps, ran the map update, and got no prompt to use the SD card. Instead it installed the map update on Internal Storage, leaving not enough space for the English Language update, which can ONLY be installed on Internal Storage:

Can anyone tell me exactly what I am missing by not being able to install this English Language update?

ALSO, your forums are constantly logging me out. I have SECONDS to post after logging in before it kicks me out again, even though I have the "remember me" check box checked. I have probably done at least two dozen catchpas so far (not even exaggerating). REAL NICE.

    BLOCKED at EVERY TURN.
  • So I do own nuvicam since May 2016 and still have few GB of free space left. I neither need nor have SD card for maps in the unit, I only have 64GB one for videos.

So the question that arises is: why do you only have 200MB space left? What exact maps do you have installed on the unit?

I distinctively remember that at some stage there was a problem (one of them of course, but I digress) with GE that did not remove previous version of the map.

Perhaps that's what happens in your case? Consider these threads:

  • As above, I'm slightly surprised you have so little free space. However you can also delete all unneeded text, vehicle, help, keyboard and EULA files. If that still doesn't resolve your issue one file you can move to the SD card is the .jcv file, move the JCV folder to the SD card, I'm not sure if it has to be in the root or a folder named Garmin, so you'll need to experiment.

Here's a directory list of the Internal Storage, if you could take a look and see if anything jumps out as being an old map or anything, I would greatly appreciate it!

That would free enough space. According to http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39231, the JCV folder should be in a folder named Garmin on the SD card. If that allows the English Language update to install, one concern I would have is whether this would cause a problem with installing a map update in the future. Hopefully not! I'll try it as soon as I'm able, as I'm not on a machine now that can run Garmin Express. :P

Is there any way I can test that the JCV folder move is working correctly?
  • A number of things jump out.

First, as I said above, you could get rid of all the unnecessary EULA, text, vehicle etc files.

Second, I don't have a nuvicam but I wouldn't on other devices expect to see a Map folder in the .system folder, and it appears to have a large map file in it. You also have a map file in the .system folder, which is where I'd expect it to be. Strangely both dates don't tally with your comment on having recently updated the map file.

If it were me I'd delete those map files, update the language file that seems to bother you so much, then reinstall the map file. The map files are the ones named gmapprom.img and the associated .gma and .unl files in the system folder, and those in the Map folder.
  • Our posts crossed :)

You can test the junction view files by running a simulated route that covers where you know there are junction views and stepping through the navigation instructions, they will show there at the appropriate point as you step through.

The date confused me as well. I assumed it meant that the last Garmin map update was in April 2018. However according to https://i.imgur.com/OLbWAom.png which was screencap'd yesterday, it's up to date. :P

I don't even know what the 500 MB English update is. But I can't imagine it's for help files... at 500 megs? I thought maybe it was supplemental map information. Seems like something I'd want on the device, if it's available.

I might try to deleting and reinstalling the maps. However, I suspect the English Language update will fail as it did when I tried removing a .SID file.

Maybe the unit wasn't new... it was shrink wrapped, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's new. It was purchased from an Amazon seller.
  • Just so I'm clear, this is this nuvicam unit we're talking about?

    https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/168823

If so, then the next question based on your detailed response & directory listing arises: why does the unit report only 7GB of total space?

Attached is how it does look like on the unit I have: 14GB total, with 9GB used by maps (EU 2019.30, probably around 6GB) and the rest.
