Updating maps Garmin drive 50 no space

Hello everyone!

I have this garmin drive 50 with free 2gb internal storage. Update need 3... GB. Map update already broke my original maps so i have nothing now. updating maps gives random error but i think it is because of space of course.

I inserted 8gb sd card and it shows up next to internal storage. question is- how can I install the update on sd card? It does not give me choice to do so.

please help!
  • Remove the card. Run Express. If there isn't enough space it will ask for a SD card. Insert the card at that point and it should work. If it doesn't it may be a faulty card so try another one.
  • Thank you for your reply SUSSAMB!

I remove the sd card. I have 1.5 GB free space on internal. Map updates show 3.6 GB. It installs rest of updates fine, but when I update map after step 1 preparing device it just says error while installing updates. It does not offer me to choose SD card. I have latest Garmin express version. What options ar there? The biggest problem is that my old maps are broken now... Cant believe there are still devices like these in 2019.

My SD card is just fine though it is not some original garmin sd card which i read somewhere that it may be the problem?

As i can see in this tutorial it should ask me for an SD card but it does not https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhW5hHb_uH4
  • That's strange. Are you running the latest version of Express? If not update Express then try again.
  • Yes, I have downloaded Garmin express yesterday from Garmin web. When I click on updates it shows green text- Your`e up to date!

I tried reinstalling it and tried 2 different computers. It seem that Express cant tell if there is space on the device. It`s always starts to update but then shows: There was an error installing the update. Seem like device problem.

  • Without knowing exactly what you've done to date it may or may not be a device issue, the latter is unlikely though. You say the map update broke your original map so you have no maps now. What did you do when that happened? What shows when you look on your device in Settings, Map and Vehicles, myMaps?
  • When the maps broke all I did was updating it trough GE. It seem that the update stuck in between, I think first it deleted old maps and started to download new ones but error occured.
When I turn on Garmin it shows that there are no maps on the device.

Under Settings, Map and Vehicles, myMaps theere is only one button- Update maps (under there is instruction to update troough GE which is not an option for me.)

Seems that the garbage can is the solution in this case :(

If only i could get a similliar device and copy the maps from to my sd card maybe it would work.
  • Can you check GE logs as per this (my) post:

    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/garmin-express/garmin-express-pc/1444947-there-was-an-error-installing-update-gpsmap-66st?p=1445075#post1445075

Then you / we will know if it's GE that is at fault here (and I guess it quite possibly is).
  • OK, sounds like the map download corrupted in some way during the downloading process, this can happen if you disconnect your device while the map transfer is still taking place. Without being able to access your device it's impossible to say but the way forward for you to correct this is to create a clone of your device, download the update files to that then copy the relevant files back to your device. Not necessarily, and in my case undoubtedly either: all downloaded content according to the logs is fine and it's the GE crashing when deciding where to send the built maps to.

Just read what's reported in the logs: - it's fairly simple:

OperationQueue | Exception in operation Garmin.Omt.Service.Operation.Map.UpdateMapOperation.
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at Garmin.Omt.Service.Operation.Map.Rules.SdRule.Evaluate(IUpdateMapRequest request, IProjection projection, IDeviceIO deviceIO)
    at Garmin.Omt.Service.Operation.Map.UpdateMapOperation.<EvaluateCapacityRulesAsync>d__35.MoveNext()

So definitely worth checking what GE logs report here.
  • Here is my log file: https://justpaste.it/66v1k

Does not seem like there is such error as you mentioned.

Tried cloning it like in SUSSAMB manual, but the same error! When I disconnect my garmin evice computer thinks my SD card is a Drive 50 device so it works nicely, but still error while updating maps.

And this is the error log when I install it only on SD card: https://justpaste.it/6egg1

Could not determine where to install the map.
