map update issue with Western Europe 2.0 on Fenix 5x and express 6.9.1 or 6.10.0

[SOLVED]
I send a Fenix 5x with a dead WiFi to Garmin assistance
the old Fenix had maps updated to latest
I got back a brand new Fenix 5x with fw 11.00, but old maps
I tried to update, all maps installed but Western Europe 2.0
I already tried hard reset the Fenix (plus deleting the .fit and .gpx file, and the history)
I reinstalled the Garmin Express app (cleaning system and user tmp folders and even Garmin's Programdata and userdata subfolders)
I went on relentlessly for as long as 1h but only result I got was to make the C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.ActiveEU.2.0\RMU\ACTIVEWEU\2_0 grow as big as 460MB (229 files)
Still the update process ALWAYS fails, with the following error message from the log file:---> (Inner Exception #0) Garmin.Omt.Service.Operation.Map.InvalidMapInstallException: Could not determine where to install the map.

There are as many as 3 open threads about this issue in the Fenix 5x forum, one of them is as old as 3 months
But looks like Gamin is ignoring them. Not even a post to acknowledge the issue

  • Excusez-moi, but that's a bodge (well, workaround), not a stable resolution going forward.

the solution is permanent on this map update
we can state it's definitive (or not) only on the next map update
but right now, once you'll apply this solution, you'll get the newest map and no more update request from Garmin Express
    .
I had the very same issue before (check my thread) with Topoactive V4 (I was on V3) and the previous solution I posted (suggested from Garmin assistance) was actually a workaround, cause it allowed me to go with the latest map, but the map update request was still there)
  • If you're out of space then try freeing some up.

Even if you take a new sd card with 32 gb still the same issue.
And also 9 gb free space on the device...
  • the solution is permanent on this map update

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying it won't work. But:
    • delete the related files with the .gma .img and .unl extension
    • delete the garmindevice.xml file (so totally it's 4 files deleted)

But in my 12 years of various Garmin devices' ownership I never had to - and strongly refrained from either - delete any of the above, or reset device. Also, I'm not happy with the idea of shuffling 7GB of data back and forth using rather non-performing built-in USB interface either.

I just expect that Garmin is able to resolve the problem they clearly created themselves - and quicker than 60 days (or 4 or so sprints).

  • Why do I have to do something manually via filesystem on the device?

This should be fixed by Garmin, not by the end user.

The manual deletion to get it working is no solution, but max a workaround for experienced users.
  • On my 5 plus the map update isn't even showing. I still have the 2017 maps on mine.
  • ...so prompted few times by Garmin Support staff recently I eventually performed the above earlier today (having made copy of the files I subsequently deleted) - and it has worked for me this time on Oregon 750t handheld unit. What's more, maps fitted on the device nicely despite previous erroneous message claiming that maps would not fit and need to be installed on SD card.

I am hoping that Garmin Support will be able to explain what happened - as there's barely any difference (one line only, I think?) between both garmindevice.xml files.
