map update issue with Western Europe 2.0 on Fenix 5x and express 6.9.1 or 6.10.0

[SOLVED]
I send a Fenix 5x with a dead WiFi to Garmin assistance
the old Fenix had maps updated to latest
I got back a brand new Fenix 5x with fw 11.00, but old maps
I tried to update, all maps installed but Western Europe 2.0
I already tried hard reset the Fenix (plus deleting the .fit and .gpx file, and the history)
I reinstalled the Garmin Express app (cleaning system and user tmp folders and even Garmin's Programdata and userdata subfolders)
I went on relentlessly for as long as 1h but only result I got was to make the C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.ActiveEU.2.0\RMU\ACTIVEWEU\2_0 grow as big as 460MB (229 files)
Still the update process ALWAYS fails, with the following error message from the log file:---> (Inner Exception #0) Garmin.Omt.Service.Operation.Map.InvalidMapInstallException: Could not determine where to install the map.

There are as many as 3 open threads about this issue in the Fenix 5x forum, one of them is as old as 3 months
But looks like Gamin is ignoring them. Not even a post to acknowledge the issue

  • I even reinstalled fw 11.00 with webupdater
  • I'm uploading a basecamp screenshot showing the installed maps names. CAuse I just chatted to Garmin UK assistance representative and his version was:

"there is no Western Europe 2.0 update. It's just a ghost update reported by Garmin Express"

So I'd like people who succeded in the Western Europe 2.0 updgrade to check the map version reported by basecamp
  • I just found your post elsewhere:

Is this really how you got it resolved - by removing everything from device and then liaising with Support so Garmin Express can complete this task?

I am having similar issues with my new Oregon750t that Garmin Express does not want to update with some dubious maps (2 x Topo Active Western Europe Update Download 4.0, 1 x Topo Active Western Europe Update Download 2018.20 - but where is the Eastern Europe map???) despite plenty of space on external SD card - and I merely started my (yet another one) adventure with GarminSupport.

Also, I got offered EU TopoActive V3 -V4 update the moment I purchased and connected it to my PC late Nov - and it was very smooth then - so did not really expect any newer update coming up soon?

Where is the issue exactly though, what these 'ghost maps' are? This clearly indicates yet another mess @ Garmin end. Have they not been moving their data to some cloud recently - as the below indicates?

    Mind boggles.
  • Hi Krzemien
the trick I suggest in Fenix 5x forum only got me to the latest Europe TopoActive map (with is actually v4)
but it did not solved the garminexpress issue about this notification of the aforementione WesternEurope v2.0

I just got (today) a written email (took them 1 week to answer) stating they acknowledged the ghost map issue and a furte update will solve it
They do not mention if it will be a Garmin Exppress Update, rather than a map update
  • Fair enough and I gave up trying myself either. Not in a hurry as device currently works as expected.

Meanwhile GarminSupport just advised that they created the case for me and investigate it.
  • First day with the Fenix 5x, I also suffer from this problem. Very disappointed.

I have the same problem. Thanks for shaing the explanation from Garmin. I'll be looking forward to the update that should resolve this.
  • 2 PCs, 2 different networks, v6.11.1.0 Garmin Express, FW v12 for my Garmin Fenix 5X.... and still always impossible to install the visible map update "Western Europe 2.0" :(

Error message is always the same in the top red banner of Garmin Express "There was an error installing the update.":(

Please Garmin do something as it is the same problem since month now...
  • I just bought a Fenix 5X - am setting it up at the moment and have had this problem all day. Exactly the same "There was an error installing the update." and can't install Western Europe 2.0

This is extremely annoying - I live in the UK and this stupid watch has installed all the latest maps apart from the one map I need to use?! Garmin needs to get their act together. The software is extremely buggy. This is just one of countless bugs I've had to deal with since purchase and I only received the watch today. They are also massively throttling the downloads of their updates and there are constant error messages when downloading anything. I can't believe you guys have been waiting a month for this to be sorted out. If we seriously can't download and install the latest maps for our region, then I'm going to return this watch.
  • Unfortunately, I have the same problem, but it's with a Garmin Descent MK1.
