Garmin Express error installing Drive 60 update

So I was trying to update my Drive 60 using Garmin Express and it seems to start ok and before it finishes "Preparing Device for Software Update", it stops with the error "There was an error installing the update". I looked in the installer log files and I see this in the Express.log file:

---> (Inner Exception #0) System.IO.IOException: Not enough Internal space to write .System\GUPDATE.GCD on device XXXXXXX.
at Garmin.Omt.Device.PortableDeviceLib.MtpUtil.OpenWrite(String path, UInt64 size, StorageLocation location)
at Garmin.Omt.Device.IO.DotNet.PortableDeviceAgent.TransferFiles(List`1 transferObjects, ProgressDelegate progressDelegate)
at Garmin.Omt.Device.IO.DotNet.PortableDeviceAgent.TransferFile(TransferObject transferObject, ProgressDelegate progressDelegate)
at Garmin.Omt.Device.IO.DeviceIO.TransferFile(IMountPoint mp, TransferObject transferObject, ProgressDelegate progressDelegate)
at Garmin.Omt.Service.Operation.Software.UpdateSoftwareOperation.<>c__DisplayClass24_0.<TransferUpdateAsync>b__0()
at System.Threading.Tasks.Task.InnerInvoke()
at System.Threading.Tasks.Task.Execute()

The device does look pretty full, ~25MB free on the Internal Storage, but there is a Memory Card with over 25GB free that it is not using. How can I get this device to update? I assume it needs to move the maps from the internal storage to the memory card and that might free up some space to let the update work, but how would I go about doing that?

TIA.
  • The problem will be the low amount of free space but I'm surprised it's that low. Have you installed additional maps etc? You can free up space by deleting all the additional keyboard, text, vehicle, voice, help and EULA files that you don't need. Copy them to your PC just in case you ever need them again. That should free up sufficient space to allow the update to proceed.
