DEM/3D-terrain is lacking shading and or resolution

After having updated my nuvi 3597 the DEM maps/3D-terrain seems so have gone down in resolution and shading for hills etc. have disappeared entirely. In the pictures below you can see before and after. I've tried system restore, deleting all the maps and reloading, bought a 32GB memory card and re-tried everything but nothing is working. I've tried chatting with Garmin support but they didn't understand the issue. Is this perhaps a "feature" of the new map update? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1411532.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1411533.jpg
  • Is the DEM map selected? If not showing check its installed, you're looking for a file named gmapdem.img

I've seen reports saying updates occasionally delete that file but if you have a back up just restore the file from there.

3D-terrain is selected but no DEM under maps, only basic 3D. There is no file on the device or memory card called gmapdem.img. Unfortunately I don't have any backups, I purchased the device on eBay. Is there anyway I can download it from Basecamp, Express or WebUpdater or am I done for?
  • Assuming it's a device with lifetime updates, re-downloading of maps to the device should cure it.

Failing that, this particular map (file) can be found on the Interweb on alternative SatNav forum and downloaded / restored separately - but as SUSSAMB is quick in removing such links, I am not going to share them with you.

  • I'm not sure a redownload would do it. Far better if the file isn't there, will be in the hidden .system folder, is to do as Krzemien suggests and find it elsewhere, Google should help you ;)

Thanks again for all the quick replies. I searched long and hard for the file you mentioned (gmapdem.img) and finally came upon it on Garmin Germany's homepage, now the maps look the way they should! :)
  • Great. I'll close this thread.
