DC 55, Cyclops, language, GPS, updates, Garmin Express, issues.

Greetings from Sweden.

I purchased a Garmin Dashcam 55 jun. 25, -18, installed it and it worked without any issues.
Aug. 8, -18, I purchased another 55 unit, to be mounted as a rear camera. This time, issues...

The placement of the cameras are not essential to my problems but the updates are!

Issue#1 I updated both cameras using Garmin Express, (GE), to version 3.70, (Aug. 11 -18) Both updates appeared to be working once disconnected from the USB connection. They would not update after download unless unplugged and started with battery power only.

Issue #2 I proceeded to update Cyclops, (speed-camera database), in GE. Downloaded correctly, but here the problems started. Neither camera would complete the install unless plugged into the car using Garmin original lighter/USB cable. Battery or USB connection, (PC), was not 'enough'? However, once connected to the car, the installation was completed.

Issue #3 The new camera would not use any other language than 'United States'. It was set to Swedish and worked until the update. The old one was still in Swedish. I tried to reset the new unit several times, both in the software and by holding the power button for 12 seconds. Nothing worked!

Plugged into my computer, I started to check the GARMIN files using the File Explorer. The GARMIN/Text folder is EMPTY! on my new unit!? Why? I don't know. One of the updates obviously removed the text files during installation? There should be 22 files in that folder, ranging from af_ZA.glx to zh_TW.glx, (camera bought in Sweden).

My old camera had all the language files intact, so I copied them into the GARMIN/Text folder of my new unit and... Yes, it works! I now have the new camera in Swedish as well.
(Files can be sent, PM me).

Issue #4 GPS reception appears to be very slow in my new unit. The old one connects as expected, without delay, but the new one "takes forever". Even after 10 minutes, the new camera will only show 3 bars, compared to 4 bars on the old one, (both cameras placed on the roof of my car in an open outside area).

It's not a real issue, since the videos from the camera records as they should, using all overlays possible, but it is a cause for concern, or a replacement. Why do the cameras behave differently from each other? Serial numbers are 1289 units apart. I have no answer for this problem yet, and I will not look further, as the videos and all other functions works as I want them to. If it's not broken, don't fix it! ;-)

I've been reading various forums about this camera and software issues. It would appear, to me, that the problems begin when you update your unit. My slow GPS is one thing, it works after all, but then there are problems with language files, voice control, Cyclops and updates in general, all GE based.

I apologize for the wall of text above but hopefully it will help someone with similar problems. I have copied ALL of the information from my cameras to my PC as a backup, should the GE updates cause any future problems for me.

Good luck and congrats on your camera. It's still a great dashcam, when it works!

PS. On first install, the unit may be a bit stubborn. For optimal and best result, connect and install your camera while outside with unobstructed GPS access.
