Nuvi 3598 - sees PC and PC sees it but Garmin Express won't

I've had to connect my Nuvi 3598 to a new PC, which means a new version of Garmin Express (GE) is installed. I got the Nuvi to be seen by the PC, I can look at it's files with file explorer (Windows 7).

The Nuvi shows the PC connected image. However, GE says a new device is detected, but when I search for the new device it isn't found. I tried the various (limited) things in the online help, but am now stumped!

There appears no way to force GE to find the device, which is clearly there.

Ideas please! (Edit: I found a copy of Map updater online, which saw my device and downloaded it's software to version 5.5, but this didn't help, nor has online chat with Garmin with appears never to answer!)

Thanks,
Sarah

PS. I have a separate issue once I can get it to connect as it's registered to my deceased husband, to an email where the ISP went bust but should have lifetime updates...........................

I had the same issue where Garmin Express recognizes the device until I try to download maps. Then it says the device isn't connected. I purchased a new one on the advice of tech support but that had the same issue.
  • I'd try another PC if you can.
  • SarahHill Don't worry too much about the registration as you can still download maps. There was an issue with a recent Express update so try updating Express then try again.

    I've tried 3 different ones.
  • That's weird. I'd call Product Support again for help.

I wanted to update my problem with not being able to download map updates. Garmin Express recognized my Nuvi 1450 and listed it as connected. It found updates but as soon as I clicked to download them, Garmin Epress said my 1450 device wasn't connected. Support had me try several things and finally decided that my 1450 was the problem. I bought a newer model and it had the same problem so I returned it. I have been checking periodically for a Garmin Express update. This week I saw an update was available. I downloaded it and tried to update my 1450. It worked. So the problem was in Garmin Express, not the devices. If you had a device that wasn't connecting properly, you might want to try again with the latest version of Garmin Express.
