nuvi 2360LMT updates went oddly, including update to older bluetooth firmware

I only use Garmin Express (GE) about twice a year to update maps and that's what I did today.

First thing that happened is it told me there was a new version of GE (as expected) so I installed it. Turns out that version was 6.5.1.

It then told me there were software updates and maps available. I believe the software update was for Bluetooth and installed it. I then chose to update the maps. For the first time, it informed me that there was not enough room on the device and I could either add an SD card (not an option for me) or choose regions. I chose US and Canada. An hour later my maps were installed. I then wanted to see how easy it would be to change the selected region but before I got to a place where I though I'd see a choice it started a new map update so there went another hour.

When all was done, I unplugged the device from the PC and powered it up. The nuvi told me my maps were over a year old and I should update them. What??? I then went through the menus to find all the versions. I keep track of that in a file. Oddly, the Bluetooth version is now shown as 5.03 A13. But the device has always before had 5.03 A15, so what does that mean? Subsequent to that first restart of the device, the restarts now appear OK with no warning. The myMaps selection shows the maps as CN North America NT, 2019.20 ALL, so I'm thinking the second map update was able to load the whole thing. Perhaps the first one did some consolidation on the device.

When I restart GE, it says my map is "Full Coverage of North America 2019.20". It also lists a software update of "Database for FM Traffic Providers" Version 4.40. I install that and all seems OK but then if I restart GE it again tells me of that same software update. That happens every time. When I look at the Map Options, this time the only choices are to Reinstall Map or Install Map to Computer. Also, GE tells me that the Device Storage is 74% Full, with 2.03 GB free.

I then looked at the version of GE and when I saw it was 6.5.1 and 6.6.0 was available I installed that one and restarted it. There is no change to anything I see.

So in summary, my questions to the forum are...
1. Was there some regression of the Bluetooth Firmware? Why did it go from 5.03 A15 to 5.03 A13?
2. Why does GE tell me every time I start it that there is an update to the FM providers database, even though I've installed the same update over and over?

I think everything else is in good shape.
  • 1. No idea
    2. Try deleting the GarminDevice.xml file from the Garmin folder on your device. It's possible that hasn't updated correctly. Then reboot your nuvi as that recreates the xml file. Now see what happens when you run Express

When you say "reboot", do you mean a hard reset or just turn the device off and on? I don't want to lose all my stored data.

  • Switch off then on. No data is lost.

Deleting GarminDevice.xml did not fix it. I found that the newly created file was identical to the old one.

I then did a Google search and found this forum topic from 2012 which described this very problem...
    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/mac-windows-software/windows-software/communicator-browser-plugin-aa/28561-

Based on stuartmw's analysis, I went to the GarminDevice.xml file and changed the Major version to 4 and Minor to 40. I then started Garmin Express and it did not offer the update. Seems fixed.

    See any downside to this?

I spoke too soon. After subsequently restarting the device and then running Garmin Express, it is again asking to install the FM Provider file. I guess I will just learn to live with it.

I'd still like to know why the Bluetooth version seems to be a lower number.

And now to add confusion to confusion...

I turned on the device when I called Garmin support to ask about the Bluetooth version. And what did I see? The version now shows on the device as 5.03 A15 again. My only thought is that Bluetooth was disabled before when I did the updates and I later re-enabled it. Maybe it all has something to do with the rebuilding of GarminDevice.xml. Maybe enabling Bluetooth. Being that I triple checked it before, I do not consider that I simply misread the version.

OK, I just figured it out. If I enable Bluetooth and then restart the device, the version is 5.03 A15. If I disable Bluetooth and then restart the device, the version shows up as 5.03 A13. It does not change just by enabling or disabling Bluetooth. It only changes when restarting the device.

    Now I can sleep better.
