Nuvi 2797LM won't stay connected to my computer?

I've had this unit for at least 4 years and it's been the best GPS I ever had but I just went to update the maps (which I do every 3-6 months) and when I plug the unit into my desktop computer that has the Garmin Express as soon as the computer makes the ding sound that indicates a UPS device has been attached the screen on the unit (that's showing the computer connect screen) goes black and the Garmin Express never finds the device.

The unit works fine when attached to my car, it seems like I just can't update the maps; I also bought a new cable just in case the cable was bad but the new cable does the exact same thing that the old cable does.

Anyone have any ideas what the problem here is and how to fix it?
  • Possibly the battery has gone bad, can you still switch it on after this happens?

I can use the button in the back to turn it back on but as soon as the computer dings to indicate that a usb device has been plugged in the screen goes black. What does it matter if the battery is bad or not, can't it get power from the computer through the USB port? If that actually is the problem then can I get the battery replaced because the unit is still good but if I can't update the maps then it really is kind of no good?
  • The USB port won't provide enough power to charge a flat battery. Give it a good run in your car so the battery is fully charged then try.
