Update for UK maps. How does it work?

Last time I used my Garmin Nuevi 756 I was in England in 2012. I downloaded City Navigator Europe: UK and Ireland with the download tool used at that time. So far so good.
This year we are going to the UK again. I dug out my nuevi downloaded Garmin Express and it showed me updates for my American maps, but not for the UK. There was a download for the UK maps under the button Tools and Content, but when I tried, GArmin Express just said there was an error, and it could not download the content. I think that is, because the download might not really be an update but the old version of my UK maps and they are still installed on my nuevi, so it doesn't install.

Well, I thought screw it, just buy and install a new version of the UK maps. Or so I thought.

Seems like the Garmin Express store only has cameras and no maps. I can go to the garmin website and buy and download City Navigator Europe UK and Ireland. They say I need Garmin Express.

So what will happen? Will the UK maps on my nuevi just be replaced? Do I have to delete the UK maps on my device first, before downloading the new ones? Shall I just give up and get a UK sim card with data and use my cell phone for navigation?

Sightseeing. A fair amount of time is spent driving between places. So using a garmin would be good. And not have to rent one from the car company.

I suspect you bought a one off map so not updateable. You'll either need to buy a new map or use OSM mapping, which is free but has numerous limitations.

Thank you for your response. I came to the same conclusion - that it is not updateable. But what happens if I buy a new map? Will it just replace the old map on my device? Do I have to delete the old map on my device first? I haven't even found a function to delete old maps.

I suspect you'll end up with two maps, the old and the new. If it were me I'd remove the old map first, if you don't you may be asked for a SD card. Note that might be required anyway but without knowing the full details I can't say with any certainty.
