Multiple maps on Nuvi 2599LMT

So looking round on my Nuvi I find multiple map files, and I'm not sure if they're all required. Can someone help?

In internal memory:

\.System\gmapprom.img - AIUI this is the current map file in use by the unit - fair enough. [2,317,877,248 bytes] - note this is not the same size as any of the versions below - read on...
\.System\gmapbmap.img - From what I've read this map is for BaseCamp - why is it here? [51,003,392 bytes]
\.System\gmaptz.img - timezones presumably [587,776 bytes]
\.System\map\D4935130A.img - ?? [181,284,864 bytes]

On the SD card:

\Map\City Navigator Europe NTU 2017.3.img [2,153,381,888 bytes]
\Map\City Navigator Europe NTU 2017.3 2.img [2,158,297,088 bytes]
\Map\D6210050A.img [2,223,833,088 bytes]

Basecamp says I have the following map products installed (attached screenshot)

City Navigator Europe 2018.3 (note note 2017 as per the filenames) on my HDD, as D6210050A.img, and as gmapprom.img
Global map in the Basecamp program folder - fair enough.

So the questions are:
- why are there 2 more copies of the CN Europe file (of differing sizes) on my SD card and can I clear them out?
- why is gmapprom.img a different size from the other file that also claims to be CN Europe 2018.3?
- do Garmin actually tidy up after themselves or just leave lots of garbage lying around?

Many thanks. Apologies if this is a repost, but I couldn't really find that it was. Lots of queries about "how do I install maps on my SD card" but not really going into detail about what happens when you do...

  • gmapbmap is a base map and has nothing to do with BaseCamp. Unless you've been installing maps using 3rd party tools and have used Express itself then I suggest you leave well alone as deleting the wrong files will cause issues. If your device works I'd stop worrying.
  • I think the file \.System\map\D4935130A.img - ?? [181,284,864 bytes] is the FourSquare POI feature. If it is the current 2018.30 version, it should have the same file date as the gmapprom.img file.

I suspect the two 2017.30 map files on your SD card are from some previous map update. I am not sure why they weren't deleted when you updated to 2018.30. When you install the full CN Europe map (not just a partial region), the map installs as two files in order to keep each file below the 4 GB Fat 32 file size limit. So that makes me wonder if the SD file \Map\D6210050A.img [2,223,833,088 bytes is the second part of your current 2018.30 CN EU map. Again you should be able to tell by the file date if it matches the gmapprom.img file.

As sussamb says, if your device is working properly it is best to leave it alone. But if you decide to delete the 2017.30 files, make a backup of them so you can get them back if necessary. Do not delete the gmapbmap.img (base map) file.

    Thanks both.

Alandb, you are correct, the two CN Europe files were not required. Thanks for the information. I did the following:

    - backed up the SD card in its entirety
    - used Express to back up my favourites (there's a limitation of this in that it only backs up internal memory, even though Basecamp allows you to nominate the SD card to send routes and waypoints to - but I had my separate backup anyway)
    - formatted the SD card  :) (just a Quick Format)
    - used Express to "Reinstall Map" (since I don't have any 3rd party maps this should be sufficient)

Now I just have the D6210050A.img file, proving that the other two files were not needed, and 4GB more space on my SD card.

Posting in case it helps anyone else.
