Nuvi 52 unable to install Map update

Decided to update my maps yesterday. That was a mistake now I have no GPS. Somehow my detailed maps were wiped out and now I cannot update my maps. When I get to the copy stage with 5 mins the Nuvi disconnects and shuts off. I have tried 4 different computers. The USB ports are not shutting off and have plenty of power. I have plenty of drive space on the computers. The Nuvi space is at about half of whatever it is factory and I have nothing installed on it except maps. I have tried Windows 7,10 and laptops ALL have same result. GPS stays lit and on plugged into USB for hours the minute it gets to copy files stage during the update it shuts off then the express errors out. I'm totally out of options after scouring the internet and forums. Anyone have any ideas?

  • If you lost maps after an update it's generally caused by disconnecting from your PC without doing a safe eject, which if the map is still being written to the device corrupts the map. It seems though you can still connect to your PC, so delete the map file, gmapprom.img, then try reinstalling.

I deleted only the file you suggested and the same thing happened. 5 mins into copying files and gps shuts off. What about the other files labeled gmapprom?
  • You could try that but they are only authentication files for the main map. There are 3 other options I can think of. Try a master reset of your nuvi to see if that helps. If that doesn't then restore your maps from a previous back up, if you have one, and then when the device is working with those try an update. Another is to use the cloning method, just google 'cloning your Garmin GPS'.

Tried the master reset. Still failed. I dont have the computer anymore with the backup so that is out. So onto the clone. I got the GPS to work but only with the SD card in. The GPS will not allow a write to the unit for more than 10 seconds so I cannot overwrite files. So I guess I have to leave the SD card in for mapping.
  • Sounds like a faulty device then. If within warranty then contact Product support. If not just stick with the card, I've had to use cards for years due to map size and everything works fine.

I believe your are correct. Something is wrong with it. I used it yesterday with the card in and it worked fine. So prior to posting to the forum I contacted Garmin support. I just got an email 4 days later and I cant believe it. This device is out of warranty and they are going to do a one time courtesy exchange of the unit. I am shocked. Just when I was about to write off Garmin they pull through! Thanks for all your help!
  • No problem, Garmin support are generally very helpful.
