Car Sat Nav query using the Mersey Gateway

Hi, I am a new user to Garmin after many years using various Tomtom devices.

I left Tomtom due various bad experiences and thought I would try a Garmin device (which I might start to regret). I live near the mersey gateway and use this crossing for driving to Manchester and use the sat nav to help with Traffic but unfortunately I am having problems with the Garmin device ( I was also having issues with the Tomtom over this crossing). Even though the Mersey Gateway opened in October 2017 after many years of planning (plenty of time for sat nav manufacturers to update their maps) the map on the Garmin is still not correct, the crossing is showing in the maps but the roads around the crossing are either missing or incorrect as are the speed limits so the sat nav will not use the mersey gateway, this is not acceptable for such a major road crossing and the amount of traffic using it. Does anyone else use a Garmin over the Mersey Gateway?
  • What map do you have installed? Which Garmin device do you have?

  • As the Mersey Gateway is a toll road do you have an avoidance set to avoid toll roads?

No I haven't, I changed it when I noticed this problem. The problem I am having is the layout of the approach roads to the Gateway are either not showing on the map (Widnes Side) and then part of the approach road on the Runcorn side is showing me driving down the the wrong way against oncoming traffic . I have reported this problem through the form but I would of thought this would be correct by now, this is one of the reasons (plus others) why I left Tomtom.
  • Garmin maps are updated up to 4 times a year. I believe that crossing only opened late last year so it probably wouldn't be on the current map, which if I recall correctly was issued in December. A new update should be out shortly which should include the crossing.

  • The strange thing is, the crossing is on there as are some of the new road layouts.......STRANGE!!!!!

Do you have any idea of when the new update is due out?

Also is there a way of reporting change in road speed limit's mor is it on the same form as the map changes?
  • Some might have been ready in time to be compiled for the current map. Others would have still been being finished.

As for the new map, generally it's every 3 to 4 months. There was an issue with the last NA map that may have delayed the EU map but I would think it should be quite soon.

  • Fingers crossed I do not have the same fiasco I had with Tomtom....

Also what about reporting speed limit changes?

Try using the Toll Road "Prompt" option, if available on your device. This may allow you to select Via points that will get your route closer to the problem area on roads with usable speed classifications. Then it may be necessary to divert your attention to the device to accept recalculation after proceeding safely. (I do not have proper maps installed to test this suggestion, but have seen it help in other locations in USA).
