Install purchased maps to PC

I have 3590LMT with an AUS/NZ map lifetime subscription. These map updates I can install to my PC for use with Basecamp, no problems.

I have since purchased a one-off map for North America and another one-off for Europe. These I have installed to the device with Garmin Express. These 2 maps are listed in Express in the device's "Purchased" tab, with a cloud download symbol to the right of these and this was the method used to install the maps to the device.

Unlike the built-in AUS/NZ map, where I have an option to install it to my PC along with the device, I don't see an option for the same for the purchased N. America and Europe maps.

Is it possible to install one-off purchased maps to the PC for Basecamp? I have tried copying over the relavant .gma/.img/.unl files from the device to the Basecamp map directory, but Basecamp does not seem to recognise them. Also, in Basecamp's Manage Map Products, these maps are not listed either.

Thanks.
  • No its not possible. You can though copy the map files from your device to a removable drive and BaseCamp will read the files from that so you don't have to connect your device each time. So a SD card, USB memory stick or a virtual drive would all work.
  • Thanks for that tip, that does seem to indeed work fine using a USB stick.

Regarding virtual drives, would you have any advice on that? I tried setting up a VD using the Windows subst command (with the target directory on the local HDD), but that did not work. I also tried folder sharing and assigning a letter to it, but no-go. It made no difference whether the maps were within a Garmin or Map sub-directory or not.

For the benefit of others using a USB stick, it is not enough to place the map files at the USB stick's root level, they must be in a directory (folder) named Garmin or Map.

It seems an odd decision (or oversight?) on Garmin's part to not allow purchased maps be installed on the PC's local HDD along with your GPS built-in map...
  • Try http://www.javawa.nl/virtualdevice.html

As for not allowing purchased maps to be installed on a hard drive along with your original GPS maps that was a decision, not an oversight, because of the different way the maps are supplied.
  • Thanks for the link, I have those purchased maps working from the local HDD now. The trick it seems is that the VD needs to be seen as a removable device.
  • Yes, anything has to be a removable drive for BaseCamp to see it.
