Installing Older Maps on eTrex 30x

On my eTrex Legend C I used a map call GPS Topo Ile de France. It was installed on MapSource and sections of the map could be downloaded from MapSource to the device. I have since installed BaseCamp and Mapinstall and have been progressively migrated things over. GPS Topo Ile de France is not registered in myGarmin.

I'm at the point where I see GPS Topo Ile de France listed in Mapinstall as already installed on my eTrax 30x. But when I look in the storage on the device I can't see where it would be installed . When I use the eTrex menus to locate the map on the device it doesn't show up and I expect that when I follow a route, the information from this map is not being displayed.

Can I have confidence in Mapinstall that the map is really installed on the device or is Mapinstall not particularly reliable? How can I check whether this map is really installed on the eTrex?

Mapinstall does not seem to provide a way to uninstall a map. Is it possible that something went wrong in the installation of this map. How could I start over?

Or am I stuck having to purchase a new map?
  • If the map is installed then it should show as available in BaseCamp when you connect your Etrex. If it doesn't then it's not there. MapInstall has always worked reliably for me, so that won't be the issue.
  • The map is not showing up in Basecamp in the Device information. Have you used like maps purchased as far back as 2008?
  • No but if it's not showing it's not there. As to what the issue is it's difficult to know.

Does the map show in BaseCamp at all? If it's correctly installed to your PC it should be visible in the BaseCamp map drop down list. If it showed in MapSource it should be there. If not then how did you obtain the map? Is it on a cd? Have you tried reinstalling it to your PC?
  • It does show in the drop down list in Basecamp. But I can't seem to get the map information to transfer to the eTrex along with routes and waypoints.
  • OK then if it shows in BaseCamp try this. Select either your Etrex or its SD card from the left hand pane. Right click and select install map ... follow the wizard that pops up.
  • Mapinstall then pops up. As I mentioned a few posts back, Mapinstall is telling me that "GPS Topo Ile de France "is already installed on the device. But the device seems to give no indication of recognizing this map.
  • Furthermore, Mapinstall does not seem to recognize all of the maps in the drop down list in Basecamp.
  • I just did an uninstall of GPS Topo Ile de France and now, even though it still appears in the drop down list, it is no longe proposed by Mapinstall.
  • Something else that's interesting, since I uninstalled that map, I am no longer seeing the message "Can't Authenticate Maps" when starting up the eTrex. It must have been this map which was causing this message.
  • Furthermore, Mapinstall does not seem to recognize all of the maps in the drop down list in Basecamp.

It'll only recognise ones that it deems suitable for your device. So ones for example locked to another won't be offered.
