Problem with my nuvi

Have old Nuvi40 for which I purchased the European maps last year. Using it in Europe. When I tried to see if there may be updates I get the garmin.com/express little picture on my screen and for updating (from a pc) and it wants to load the lower 48 states. I don't want that. But, now I seem to be dead. If power on with just unit I can see and use European files. Good. But if I plug in the garmin I get the garmin.com/express screen. Plug into wall, plug into car, plugged into pc.

Customer service said I should buy a new unit. I said there must be a fix. Any suggestion from the more informed?

Are you saying that all you can do is go into PC mode whichever cable you use but your nuvi works when not plugged into a cable? First, if plugged into PC that's normal and depending on the cable may be normal when plugged into AC. If it's not working correctly when plugged into the car power cable that came with the nuvi it points to a faulty cable, or possibly a faulty connector on the nuvi. If the latter then there are some places that can repair it but given cost of a new one that may be a more cost effective solution. May be worth trying a new power cable first though.
