Garmin Express PC for nuvi 3597 doesn't recognize SD card but MapInstall does

I cannot get my new 2018 NA maps to load into my 3597 since Garmin Express doesn't recognize the SD card that's installed. I keep getting an error for not enough storage on the 3597, advising me to insert an SD card. However, the old MapInstaller DOES show the nuvi 3597 with an SD card installed. I'm assuming this is a problem with the Garmin Express software.

Can I use the old MapInstaller to load my maps into the 3597? when I try to use it, it says there no unlocked maps available. I'm assuming that I can download my map update, but neither Garmin Express (in its tools section) nor MapInstall allow me to download the maps.

Thanks for any help.

Mike
  • I suspect you mean MapUpdater and not MapInstall? MapUpdater struggles with some newer devices.

Try Express again but only insert the card when asked to do so by Express.

    Hi SUSSAMB,

    No, I’m referring to MapInstall ( https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3291 ).

I’ve never heard of MapUpdater, but since my 3597 is about 8 years old, I would hope that both MapInstall and MapUpdater would work with my nuvi 3597

  • MapInstall will only install maps from your PC to your device. MapUpdater is the predecessor to Express. The reason MapInstall is giving you the error message is because you don't have any suitable maps on your PC.

Try the suggestion I gave you above for Express. Note the card must be formatted FAT32.

I ran the current version of Garmin Express with my 3597 only; no SD card. GEx identifies that I have map updates, but when it's prepping, it comes back with an error that says not enough room on the 3597. The only option is CANCEL. GEx never prompts me to insert an SD card.
  • Strange, even if it doesn't prompt for a card it should offer you a smaller map region.. You'll need to contact Product Support for detailed help. I'm assuming here you do have lifetime maps?>

Thanks. I’ll do that. I do have lifetime maps. In fact, I updated them about 8 months ago.

I finally got my maps to install. I used Garmin Express to download the maps to my PC. Then I used MapInstall to install the maps to my 3597.

    What an ordeal :)

    Thanks for your assistance.
  • Just be aware that will only install the map. It won't update any other files that need updating, so no junction view for example. You really need to get Express working.

I spent days working with tech support via email, but they couldn't figure out my problem. Since MapInstaller recognizes my SD card and Express doesn't, this tells me that Express has a problem, not my 3597.

This group here was my last (almost) resort, and I got help here. At least I know my SD card works.

    Thanks again.
  • Well not necessarily but if you're not fussed about junction view etc then at least the map will work.
