Nuvi 1350 cannot load maps to computer to show on Basecamp

Sorry, I am new to Garmin. Just got a Nuvi 1350 and got everything set up on Garmin Express. When I look at the instructions to load the map to my computer it says I need to click map options. Map options do not show up on my Garmin express. It just says map updates available. Any help is appreciated. I want to be able to see my detailed maps when I am on basecamp without my unit plugged into my computer. I hope this makes sense if not ask away and I will try to explain better. Here is a screenshot of my Garmin Express if that helps. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1312065.png
  • You can only load the maps if there is a map update for your device. Which map is loaded to it? Does it come with lifetime maps?

I just bought this thing for $15 on Amazon to use on my snowmobile. I have no updates available. It looks like there is North America and Europe loaded on it and it looks like the last version I have is 6.30. So I am out of luck as far as that goes? I just have to have my unit hooked up via USB to see the detailed maps on Basecamp? Thanks in advance I do appreciate the advice.
  • Well there are other ways, you can copy the map files to a removable drive, so something like a sd card, memory stick or virtual drive and BaseCamp will read the map files from that.

I have very similar questions if anyone's willing to explore this topic a bit more. I would really love to be able to sit down at my computer and plan my trips in BaseCamp without having to plug in my device every time. When I look at the files loaded on my device, the large files are.img files, so I'm assuming those are the map files, however, I'm also guessing that some of the other small files with different file extensions are perhaps akin to license files or hold some ancillary, but necessary data. Anyone have a good grasp of these file structures, which ones to copy, and the limitations concerning where to copy/paste them so that BaseCamp can properly recognize them?

I plan on trying the virtual drive method SUSSAMB mentioned, but still could use guidance related to the questions posed above. Also, I'm wondering why BaseCamp would recognize maps on a virtual drive or USB drive, but not on the C:\ drive or other hard disk?

    Many thanks!
  • The main map file is gmapprom.img

To allow BaseCamp to use it copy it to a folder named Garmin on a usb memory stick or SD card. BaseCamp will read the map from that.

Note though that if you have a device with lifetime maps they can be installed to your PC using Express so that BaseCamp can use them.

That would be awesome. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that's not the case for me. I have the US TOPO 100K that came along with my fenix 5X. I've poked around in Garmin Express quite a few times and saw no such option.

In my opinion, Garmin needs to do much more integration with computers, in general. Imagine how improved the end-user experience would be if they could manage all of their device settings, customization, and data with the convenience of a keyboard, mouse, and large screen. Then it would only be a matter of clicking 'sync' and voila. If anyone has ever played around with programming higher-end universal remotes via their dedicated computer software, you know exactly what I'm picturing. This would be particularly powerful for the fenix 5X, since it's generous scope for customization is, unfortunately, incredibly tedious to fully utilize with only five buttons and a tiny screen. Garmin Connect seems to be a small step in that direction, but it only has access to a tiny fraction of all the settings and customization available... for my device anyway.
  • Those maps can't be installed to your PC using Express..

yeah, I figured, but I do appreciate the confirmation. sometimes these sorts of things drive me crazy. i'm working on this today, so i'll post back if I have any success.

follow-up question, if I were to buy garmin's 24K TOPO map, would I be able to use that in BaseCamp without connecting my device? I'm considering buying, but probably won't if it's also just locked to my device. right now i'm using the openstreetmap routable topo maps. they're ok, but I wouldn't mind an upgrade.
