What happens if I lose my Garmin GPSMAP 64s with $400 worth of maps on it?

If I'm understanding it correctly, the maps (TOPO U.S. 24K Northeast, etc.) that I pay for and download from Garmin are installed on and are tied to my handheld device. So if I lose my Garmin handheld device, then do I lose the $400 (4 maps) that I've purchased from Garmin? How does that work? If I then purchase a new handheld unit, can I reinstall the maps onto it? Thanks.
  • No. If you lose the maps you lose them. You can though back up the map files to your PC but they won't work on any other handheld.

Wow.... that is scary! Eventually I'll have like $700+ worth of maps on there. But I totally understand why Garmin does it this way. I guess the obvious solution is to just never lose your GPS unit!
