just bought a Drive 50, installed Express 6.0.0.0 and it's locked in an Express loop

The documentation said to connect to the Garmin Express site and download updates, I did, (almost 4GB which cost me $40CAD cellular internet connection) and had horrible problems. Initially I was able to add the device and give it a name. Then the problems started. First I clicked Install All, it tried to find the Drive 50 and wouldn't when it was attached to a USB 3.0 port. It would find it using a USB 2.0 port.
It started updating Software, but at the point it was supposed to Restart, it said the drive wasn't connected. Not a good sign. I repeated this several times with no luck.
When I unplugged it and turned it ON it did update the software to 5.6.0.0 then it displayed the Express logo even when unplugged. Upon plugging it in and opening Express, Express said there were updates available to 5.6.0.0 but the drive wasn't connected for it to see that 5.6.0.0 had been installed.
This went on until finally, I unplugged the drive, turned it ON, saw the 'normal' options, chose "Where", Simulate Satellites, tried to input an address and it wouldn't recognize that it was in Ohio, so it wasn't found. Not long after I got a "battery low" warning so I reconnected to the PC and lo and behold there was Express again, it wouldn't let me get to the 'normal' screen and was trying to update the software again.

I'm not pleased with the short battery life which would require me to carry around my Anker 12,000mAh backup battery attached if I wanted to use it out of the car, but I can understand this since the GPS is so "slim" it can't have large batteries.

If there's a problem with Express 6.0.0.0 then I'd like to get the last version in the Express 5 series because if not, having just bought this through Amazon, it's going back to Amazon as defective, not suitable for the purposed intended (that being I want easy hassle free updating, no looping Express and the abiltity to be detected on both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, etc.). Amazon will box it up and send it back to Garmin. Amazon won't like it but I'll also return the Garmin friction mount, unopened for obvious reasons.
  • Express isn't designed for cellular internet which is possibly why you had issues. I suggest you call Garmin support for help as there are no issues with Express 6.0.0 that would create the problems you're experiencing. As for battery life, the automobile units aren't designed to be used like a handheld, should you need that then there are specific devices available.

As far as "internet" goes, it's the same whether it's accessed over wire, satellite or cellular. But the prices charged do differ significantly. It's the size of the download, specifically Maps that would cost me $40 per download if the entire map file of 3.65GB had to be downloaded every time rather than performing an incremental update/download of just what's been added since the last update which might be measured in MB.

As far as the other issues, a PC reboot installed a driver and Express now sees the GPS on USB 3.0 and therefore when there are updates I expect that the "not connected" looping won't happen. Other software is able to perform installs without rebooting, those that do tell the user explicitly to reboot, Express did neither so it seems their programmers are about 10 years in the past. With Sleep and Hibernate, many folks never reboot automatically when installing software or just for fun.
