Garmin Express 5.8 VISTA 32 bits

Hello I was out of the country for some months and upon returning I tried connecting my Garmin to download my training, every time I try to open Garmin Express I get message it won't. After reading several forum messages I understand you decided out of the blue to remove every VISTA and XP software compatibility for your clients. I tried installing an older version like V3.2.30 it works up until the moment it auto-updates even if I have removed the auto update check box. This is very disturbing you can't decide people need new O.S and or new PC's in order to run it. You should at least give the customer the possibility to keep and older version of the software, how in the world do you make a forced upgrade in software knowing it WILL NOT work on an older O.S?
Does Garmin relies on stock from Microsoft for financing and you need your customers to buy new software?

Can someone tell me if there is an older version that does not auto update?

Hello this is all I can say that may be able to help you.

Did you try to uninstall the software and reinstall the software it might have been corrupted somehow on your computer, I would try that first.

If you have Windows Vista/Windows 7 you are able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free that offer is ending this year December 31, 2017 here is the link to download the program from Microsoft.

If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will be upgraded to Windows 10 home or Pro version depends on your present computer operating system.

Sorry to say Microsoft doesn’t offer it to Windows XP users.

Click or copy and paste the above link.

If you don't have a Microsoft Hotmail account you should open one simply for the reason you can associate your new Windows 10 upgrade to the Hotmail account which in the future you be able to reinstall Windows 10 by itself you don't get a key/serial number is associated with your machine and your Hotmail account.

One other thing if you do decide to upgrade to Windows 10 do not stop the process until it completely finish for by doing so could or most likely will corrupt your operating system.

I would suggest backing up any documents pictures/videos or anything else you may want to safeguard against losing.

Hope this helps in some way.

I’m in the same mess myself. Very annoyed that Garmin updated my working version of GE with one not usable on Vista. Makes my Edge 500 useless too.
So I bit the bullet and for a few pounds upgraded to Win7. Hours and hours later I still can’t get GE to install. On installation I get the give it permission page and then it just disappears.
Ive tried everything I can find about it and nothing has worked. As uninstall wouldn’t work I ended up physically removing all files and registery entries I can find referring to Garmin. Followed with a registery and file clean and still no joy.
  • Yep, GE 3.2.29 was the last to run on XP and 5.5.0 the final for Vista. As I recall old versions of GE won't even run because of it's auto-update feature (even if the OS you're using doesn't support the new version).

Fortunately Win7 has a few more years before support for it ends (and Garmin makes GE incompatible with it).
  • Hello Guys, yes I do have VISTA and despite all the bad talk around it's the only stable running on this PC. I won't even try 7 or 10 because this is a very old PC and will certainly drag along... For now I use my wife 7 and we do have a tablet with 10 but all my work is done on my own PC. The forced auto update is something very strange, how come in the US nobody files a lawsuit, because when bought the system requirements was described and it is supposed to work as per the initial contract. I really despise the fact that Garmin uses her market domination to treat loyal and old customers in such ways. Microsoft sent me a detailed info my Vista O.S receives no more updates etc but IT WORKS damn it!
  • I run GE 5.8.0 in a Win7 VM (Virtual Machine)--even on a WinXP SP3 box. :) Of course I only used it to obtain map updates every 3 months or so.

PS: I used to have GE (5.5.0) in a Vista SP2 VM until it "auto-updated". I bought a genuine Win7 update DVD and made a Win7 VM.

thanks garmin780i, I took the free upgrade for win10. Everything now working swimmingly Its also transformed a very old Vista laptop into a machine which is a pleasure to use again.
  • There is a work-around that works for me on my Vista laptop using Garmin Express v 5.5.0.0 which is the last version that works on Vista. The trick is to avoid the forced update of Garmin Express that happens when you launch the older version of Express. I wrote this up in another forum: See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/47655?page=0#comment-459372. Note that some old versions of Garmin Express are available on the popular Perry Garmin Archive. Just Google it and you will find it.
