Garmin Express will not download maps from Nuvi to Basecamp

I got a new computer, Win 10, and cannot get the maps from my Nuvi 1490LM to isntall on Base camp. I have been doing this for several years [Even from the days of MapSource] and this is my first hitch.

Maps installed just fine on my primary computer. I loaded my topo maps fine on the new computer. I opened a ticket Monday but still don't have a number from Garmin. When I run Base camp with the GPS connected it can see the maps from the Nuvi and the Nuvi is also working file in terms of navigation etc.

I have rebooted. have cleared my Cache, I have uninstalled Base camp [seeing if GE could reinstall it] and am my wits end. I have reinstalled Base camp [even though it worked fine with the topo maps and can see the maps on the connected Nuvi]. I could just copy the map files to my computer but they are locked.

Any other ideas of what is going wrong? The download does not even start. I just get a constantly varying "time remaining"
  • I reinstalled Garmin Express and it won't see the device. I am going to connect to my main computer and see what it says.
  • AHA. The issue is with the newest version of Garmin Express! when I connected to old computer all was fine until it popped up and installed the latest version - then it would not talk to my current GPS.....I guess I will have to call Garmin on the phone.
  • You're confused I think. Express cannot install maps from your nuvi to your PC. What it can do is download maps to your PC for BaseCamp to use, so run Express and look at map options, select Install to PC.

Incidentally Express latest version works fine on both Win10 and Win7 with all my devices. If yours isn't delete the device from Express then re-add it, that should cure any issues.
  • MB, my terminlogy may have been off vis a vis "download to computer" but I am not at all confused. I have, as stated, used Garmin express with base camp for a number of years without any issues on multiple computers from Vista to Win 7 to Win 10 (both computers are Win 10). A new GE update was apparently released while I was in process and perhaps it gummed up the works.

I actually uninstalled and reinstalled garmin express. Finally got it to work again on my primary computer and then decided to update the maps again on my device even though they are current, figuring maybe the failures on the new computer were related to some file corruption on the GPS.

I was able to connect after reinstalling the device maps to the GPS and have gotten to the "time remaining 1 minute" part of the download on the new computer. That was approximately 1 hour ago and it is hung. but I am leaving it alone. I have had it hang there before but never quite this long. It is in the "Downloading Files" phase of the install. I wish I could just copy the darned things to a jump drive and have Basecamp recognize it but they are locked.
  • Finally. Success. It has NEVER taken this long before. I guess if Garmin ever gets around to contacting me regarding my ticket [I have an email from them but not a ticket number] I will point them to this thread. I thinking having Garmin Express decide to update while in the middle of copying maps to Basecamp could be the root cause of the problem. It gave me no option otherwise.
