Reinstalling Map to new location after already installed

When installing a new updated map using Express, clicking on details allows you to install it to the device and computer (for BaseCamp). During the initial update, it also allows you to install to a location of your choice on the PC. Assuming that I could install the map to my NAS drive, so I could use it on both my desktop and laptop, I installed it onto the NAS (in addition to the device). On completion, I received an error, and found that it did not install to the NAS.

So then, I opened Express again, to install the map to the original path on my OS (C: drive), however the NAS path was preset there and would not allow me to change the path back to the C: drive. Apparently, Express only allows you to change the path on the original update of a map, but not after it is once installed. My problem now is that the latest update did not install it on my NAS, nor will it now allow me to install it back to the original C: drive path.

Is there a way to change the path when re-installing the map to the computer, or is there a way to copy it from the device to the original path on the PC? If not, is there now a way I can get this latest map on my PC to the original C: path in any way? If not, apparently I will have to plug in my device each time to use the latest map on BaseCamp, a real pain!
  • Search for JaVaWa's GMTK program. It allows you to change map locations as well as providing other useful tools.
  • Ok, downloaded and installed JaVaWa. Used it to move the map from my laptop to a folder on my NAS drive. Went into C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps and saw a shortcut was added there, to the new NAS folder that I moved the map to which obviously enabled that map to show on BaseCamp.

Now, on my Desktop, figured I could do the same, by adding the same shortcut to the NAS Map folder under C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps, and sure enough the map appeared on BaseCamp.

However, when I moved the map using JaVaWa on my laptop, the map appeared as Unlocked. But when I added the short cut manually on my Desktop, although the map appeared, it was Locked. Using JaVaWa I was able to copy the unlock codes to another folder on my NAS Drive, which then advised I needed to unlock the map on my desktop BaseCamp, but when clicking OK on this message, it did not unlock it.

Totally confused that with BaseCamp on my laptop and on my desktop now pointing to the same map on the NAS drive, that one is unlocked and the other is locked. How do I get the map on my desktop unlocked?? Are the unlock codes stored somewhere under the BaseCamp installation folder that they have to be copied to?

Also, I don't see anywhere for this post, to send any replies to my email. I just happened to visit today and found the JaVaWa response of a week ago, not realizing there was a response.
  • Ok, figured out why, after moving the map with JaVaWa, only unlocked the map on the PC I moved the map from. Obviously, the necessary items needed to unlock a BaseCamp map, are accomplished by this program, on the Basecamp installation where the map is being moved from. As such, the map is unlocked immediately after being moved by JaVaWa.

However, being obvious that these items are not processed on the BaseCamp installation of the other PC, only the map is provided by virtue of a manually created shortcut there, in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps. So it becomes necessary to copy and import the 2 items necessary to unlock the map on the other BaseCamp installation. These are the unlock code and .gma file. The unlock code changes it from locked to unauthenticated. The .gma file is then needed to change it to unlocked.

Both of these can be done within BaseCamp, using the Maps -> Manage Maps option. First though, you have to get the unlock code by logging into your my.Garmin website account. Once you have it, then within the BaseCamp Manage Maps window, you click on the map in question, and then Unlock Region, click Add and Enter the unlock code. Then you can get the .gma file from the device, by first connecting the device and accessing the .System folder under where the device shows on your File Explorer. At the bottom of this folder will be the .gma files. Find the one appropriate to the map, click on it and click on "open". It then installs the .gma file after which your map will be unlocked.

Hope this helps anyone wanting to access BaseCamp maps from a central NAS location.
