Where to get Junction View (.jcv) file for CN EU 2018.1?

Hello All:

I have a Zumo 660 (the Atlantic model). The built-in memory on this device is not big enough to accept a full download of CN EU 2018.1.

This leaves me with two choices - either one of which is fully acceptable to me: Buy a micro SD card and put the full download on the micro SD card, or, download the map update to my computer, then use MapInstall to install a portion of the new 2018.10 map to the internal memory of the Zumo 660.

There is one disadvantage to the above two choices, though, and that is that I don't get the benefit of the Junction View feature if I install the map in one of the above two ways.

In the past, Garmin has been kind enough to host the .jcv file somewhere on their servers (typically at download.garmin.com), and that has allowed me to download the .jcv file and then put it into the JCV folder on my Zumo 660, thus enabling the Junction View feature.

Does anyone know the URL I can use to download the .jcv file for CN Europe 2018.10?

Thanks, Michael
  • No, not sure the latest one has been released. You will need to use the SD card route.
  • If your zumo came with North America maps and your Europe map is an added supplemental map, I don't think there is any way to make Junction View for Europe work, even if you can find the file to download.

Edit: Oops! I missed that you said "Atlantic model". As sussamb said, use a SD card and use Garmin Express to reinstall the map. Express should give you the appropriate JCV file.

    Hi Sussamb:

Actually, I have tried both methods (loading updates onto the SD card, and also loading a partial cartographic update onto the GPS itself using MapInstaller), and both methods work. I think the partial load into the Zumo 660s internal memory is the better choice, because the unit responds much faster... my experience has been that when the device has to fetch map data from the SD card, especially when there is a huge file on the SD card, it performs recalculations and other functions much more slowly.

What I am hoping to find is a .jcv file for CN EU 2018.10 that I can download and then transfer directly into the JCV folder of the device. If anyone here in the forum knows where I can get such a file, please let me know.

    Thanks, Michael
  • As I said in the earlier post, Garmin Express will give you the appropriate JCV file when you install the map update, assuming you are updating the map region that came preinstalled on your device. Garmin used to provide the full screen North America JCV file as a separate download for users of the 1xxx and 8xx nuvi devices, but they quit doing that a few years ago. AFAIK, they have never provided Europe JCV files as a separate download and I suspect they will not do it for you. If you find the file you want online, it will most likely be from a nefarious site that provides pirated content ... it is very risky (and possibly illegal) to download from those sites as they often distribute malware as part of the download. If you have a friend or relative who has a compatible Garmin device with the same map version, you might be able to get them to provide the JCV file to you.

Note that if you don't want to do a reinstall of the map directly to your device, you could use cloning to download the full map update (including the JCV file) to a thumb drive. Then copy the JCV file from the thumb drive over to your device.
  • As I said, and as alandb is saying, just use Express to download the map and jcv file

  • Alandb, Sussamb:

Thanks very much for your elaborated explanations. I took the SD card out of my 660, connected the device to my computer, and downloaded just the regional file (Spain & Portugal) that I need to use at this moment, and everything worked perfectly - as you said, Garmin Express installed a .jcv file (smaller than usual, which corresponds to the smaller than usual .img file for the Spain & Portugal region). I went riding today and the Junction View feature is now working.

I also discovered that the full size .jcv file that I was originally looking for exists on my computer, this because I had selected "install files to device and computer" back when I did the original update to the latest complete version of CN EU NT 2018.10. The file is normally hidden - it is necessary to disable the "Hide Protected Operating System Files" choice in Windows to find it - but on my Windows 10 machine, the .jcv files are in the path C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map ... (within the appropriate map folder).

Again, thanks for your assistance, and for persisting in answering my question.

    Michael
