Nuvi memory and map updates

My Nuvi 2598 says it falls a little bit short of enough memory to take recent full Europe maps updates. But it installs anyway, without addition of SD card, apparently fitting itself to the size available. In settings it says that all of northern and southern Europe are installed. My question - what has been left out to do this? There must be protocols about what is left out. For example, do they drop countries, areas or POIs. I would like to know this generally - for every time I update - not just for my current installation. I realise of course that I could install an SD card as well but I'd like to know what happens without one. So far, I haven't been able to get an answer from Garmin. Thanks
  • If it's installed both south and North you have the full map. What makes you think you haven't?

Note nothing will be "dropped". It will either install or it won't.
  • One thing you should do is check the amount of free space left on your device. Even if the full map fit, if you are very short on free space you can encounter booting and/or operational problems if the free space gets completely exhausted. Over time, normal operation can use up free space with trip logs, saved places, routes, etc.

Garmin Express wanted to install the map update to an SD card because the installation would be about 400MB more than the internal memory. I clicked on to options to investigate but it went straight to installation anyway and only installed it onto the internal memory. The resulting size was, as expected, smaller than predicted and apparently made to fit, with about 30MB to spare. Even Garmin support agreed that something will have been dropped but couldn't tell me what it would be, other than guessing "Eastern Europe" or POIs. It would be helpful to know. Even if I eventually go for the SD card option.
  • It sounds like your best option is to put in a SD card and reinstall the map.

  • You would have needed to have selected a different area, it doesn't just happen. You may not have realised what you did. As suggested, try a reinstall, either having added a card or without.
