GPS not detected on Windows 8

Hello,

in the hope of updating my maps I connected the GPS (n?vi 2545) to the computer (Windows 8.1) via USB cable (GPS side: mini-USB).
The problem is, the PC won't take any notice. The GPS doesn't show up in the list of drives, and Garmin Express searches in vain for a device to update.

The GPS, however, seems to think to be connected; I join a picture of the display.
This display then freezes, whether I leave the device plugged to the PC or not. It is impossible to turn it off, even pressing the power button for a long time makes no difference. The only way to turn it off is to wait until it runs out of battery.

Could anybody give me some advice? I would really like to update the maps; it's been many years. Thanks! ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1232629.jpg
  • Can you boot it up into normal navigation mode (perhaps by connecting it to the power adapter in your car)? If so, try changing it from MTP mode to mass storage mode (Google it).
  • Fantastic!
Maps are charging while we talk.
Thanks a million, my upcoming holiday trip owes you in smoothness!
For anybody interested, here is how to change the little devil from MTP to mass storage mode:

    1. Bring up the volume screen on the GPS.

    2. On the upper right hand corner. Press your finger on screen and hold for appx 10 seconds.

    3. Shortly you will see the developers screen.

    4. Find MTP Settings and touch it.

    5. It will show 3 selections. MTP Auto Detect,Mass Storage and Mass Storage Single Session.

    6. Touch Mass Storage as your selection.

    7. Now select save and you are good to go.

... still can't believe how easy that was ...
  • Great! Glad you got it working. Now that you have it in mass storage mode, do yourself a favor and make a complete backup of all files and folders on the device. Note that there is a hidden folder named \.system that contains the map and other important files. Before backing up, you will need to expose the \.system folder by changing your Windows folder settings to show hidden files and uncheck the option to hide operating system files.
  • Thanks for the advice, I followed your suggestion. Better safe than lost ...
